Something is very off with him. If he's hiding an injury, they'd better scratch him until he's 100% ready.

You can tell he is playing injured because he RARELY has rushed the puck in the last month or two. When he is healthy, you could count on one of his coast to o-zone rushes 1-2 times a game.

Tonight I noticed he tried to close a pretty big gap rushing back on Jimmy Hayes and he just barely made it with a serious effort. Thinking back to times like him closing up on Kessel with two strides, I wonder if there's something effecting his skating specifically, and that's rippling out since so much of his game is built upon that.

He made that horrible giveaway that lead to the Panthers first goal.

Just because he was a -77 during that time, it doesn't indicate his intangibles.

I noticed that too, and there have been similar moments all year. It has to be more than just his shoulder and the pressure of being captain.

Might be similar to Nash last year. Not fully healed, misses a lot of time early, lingers throughout. Though, I think it has more to do with being taken off the first PP, and having trouble finding his confidence offensively because he's not getting those touches in the other zone. So the only place he plays the puck is in our zone and he kind of converts his game back to Torterella years. Very good, and capable top pairing shut down player, but we all know there's a lot more he can be.

Good call. Messier came back in the 2000-2001 season.

But Leetch was -18 the year the messiah returned, so maybe it was a carryover.

The thing I don't understand about McDonagh is how does injury equal stupidity?

I can understand if he can't do certain things as good as he used to due to an injury, but it's like he suddenly became stupid. The amount of stupid passes and bad decisions he is making is very upsetting.

McDonagh has not been good all season. That being said, the team is in good position. So the answer is that we need to hope he can correct whatever the issue is by the playoffs.

What ?
McDonagh has not been great as he can be but he sure as hell has not been worse than 90% of the players that would replace him.
Easing up wouldn't be a bad idea here.
The guy is still an integral part of the team and very much needed.

McDonagh hate is misplaced here. He deserves some slack. This is a player who has played his heart out for this team.

His criticism is justified.

5-on-5 GA/60 -- Points -- GF%

2013-14:
2.17 -- 43 points in 77 games -- 52.8%

2014-15: 2.47 -- on pace for 31 points in 71 games -- 50.9%

It's interesting, my concern for McDonagh this year would be keeping up with his offensive pace from last year, but he's been fine in that regard; His defensive game has been off.

Maybe McDonagh realized what it takes to win a cup and is saving something for the playoff push... U c ryan suter play 30 mins a night if shutdown defense and offensively and he dies out late in the year and in the playoffs. Maybe McDonagh did film work on how dmen handle big minutes and is trying to do less intensive playing so he can kick it up a notch in the playoffs? Idk just the thoughts of a McDonagh defender at 4 in the morning

I do not think that is the case. His play has been mediocre. I think that the "C" is weighing on him. But that is not the only reason. Certainly the way that he has begun to loose battles in corners (like the glaring one last night) should not occur, no matter if he is wearing a letter or not.

Comparing him to glass in any way at all is not even the slightest bit justified thankfully.

This scenario is possible.

When the playoffs hit, McD will step it up, and Nash will play like ****.

I'm obviously putting lots of hyperbole into this... But I'm inclined to say he's been 3rd worst player on the team after glass and Stempniak (the latter of which I happen to like, but I'm still not totally impressed)
