An interesting story.

So, earlier this morning, I was driving home from work in my suburban New Jersey town. A new season and an improved Predators blue line was on my mind, and my attention was anywhere but my speedometer. Consequently, the thing that we all dread when traversing the thoroughfares occured, as it invariably does when one's mind wanders to hockey whilst driving on a bright fall morning. Sighing to myself, I pulled over to the shoulder of the road, I put my window down, placed my hands on the wheel...and waited. After what seemed like an eternity, the officer finally got out of his cruiser and ambled slowly up to my window. What he said...well...I was not expecting:

Officer: Hockey fan?
Me: uhh..excuse me?
Officer: I noticed the Predators sticker in your back window and the NHL decal in your side window.
Me: haha, oh. yeah...our season starts tomorrow night. You're a hockey fan?
Officer: haha, well, up until last year...I was a hockey PLAYER?
Me: really? you played adult rec? who for?
Officer: nah. I played professionally, in the East Coast Hockey League.
Me: haha, are you kidding? who did you play for?
Officer: I spent most of my time with the Baton Rouge Kingfish, but I also played for the Wheeling Nailers. Before that, I came up through the USHL. I was a defenseman, but decided to come home and settle for a "calmer life" as a policeman.
Me: haha, gosh, that's so cool. What's your name?
Officer: Keith Bland. haha, but...now that I've got my little ego trip out of the way, do you know why I pulled you over?
Me: haha, yeah...I guess I was going a little fast.
Officer: haha, yuup. Mind on the Preds season, huh?
Me: haha, yeah.
Officer: well, let me run your license and registration, and if you come back clean, I'll let you off this time. I can definitely empathize, but you need to make sure you keep your mind on the road from now on.
Me: wow, thanks...you've given me quite a story to tell.

so...basically...that's the coolest cop, ever...and some research shows that his story is indeed true. he was apparently a fan-favorite goon in the ECHL, and lead his USHL team in PIMs, as well. I thought that was an interesting experience.

Too bad, if he'd have given you the ticket, you'd have had his autograph!
