Iginla becomes first black captain in NHL history

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) -- Jarome Iginla became the first black captain in NHL history Wednesday when the talented forward was tabbed to wear the 'C' by the Calgary Flames.

"I have been very lucky to have played with many great captains that I have learned from over the course of my career,'' Iginla said in a statement. "I believe I am better prepared to assume this role as a result of playing with players such as Craig Conroy and Dave Lowry. I'm ready for the next challenge and the responsibilities that go with it.''

Conroy, Iginla's linemate, served as Flames captain the past two seasons. Conroy and defenseman Robyn Regehr will be alternate captains.

"Jarome and I have discussed his eventual captaincy of this organization for some time now,'' Conroy said. ``I strongly believe that he has all the qualities of the leader required to bring our club to the next level.

"If I had any sense from Jarome that he was not ready, I was prepared to remain as team captain but there is no doubt in my mind that at 26 years old he is prepared to assume the role.''

Iginla is entering his eighth NHL season. He won the NHL scoring title in the 2001-2002 season as well as an Olympic gold medal with Canada at the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City.

"Jarome is a quality young man and a terrific hockey player who people look up to,'' Flames head coach and general manager Darryl Sutter said. "Hs work ethic and commitment to being the best are examples of how all players should prepare and compete.

"I commend Craig Conroy on recognizing that the time was right for Jarome to take on a greater role as a leader and for making his team's success the highest priority.''

Thats awesome!

I just hope he can deal with the added pressure.

Even Chris Pronger who is Iggy's senior by alteast a few years, has given away the C (or rather let another deserving player wear it) because he wants to focus on making his on-ice contribution.

Good Luck to Iggy....ewww i feel so dirty saying that to a flame (if you didnt already know, im an oiler fan all the way lol.)

I think it's more a way to show his respect to Al McInnis . Pronger's the real deal .

Shows you how little I pay attention to race, I wouldn't have guessed that.

Good for him, he'll do a good job I'm sure.

Am I the only one who think Iginla will perform even better with the added responsibilty of being captain?

Apples and Oranges. Iginla is BY FAR the best player on the Flames and will be for a long time. Pronger is a great player and leader, but Iginla doesn't have a McInnnis or Tkachuk on his team.

Finally, hopefully he will prove that he's worth it thru out the season. But this is good for all black hockey players, especially the kids, this will bring the rest of us to the hockey rink rather than Miami Hurricanes stands.

For those who are interested, Conroy and Regehr were named the alternates.

This is quite the honour for Robyn, who was chosen over leaders like Gelinas, Lowry, Gauthier and Yelle.

Good for Iggy, good for the Flames.

Now, just as long as he doesn't beat out Markus Naslund for Hart... I'll be very happy. :p

Congrats to Iggy. He deserves the captaincy. He is the face of that team. There is no better ambassador for the game than Jarome Iginla. Maybe this will help encourage more black kids to pick up a stick and lace up some skates, and that can only be good for the game. He is a great guy who can have a large influence in the African-American community with his status. I know he'll make the best of it.

Iginla LOVES pressure, so I think he'll cope well.

But Sutter believes that the 'C' will help him take his game to the next level (like it did Pronger's) and make him learn to take on added responsibility (hell, the teams fate already lies on his shoulders).

The same thought process went into making Regehr an alternate/assistant. It makes them feel like they play a bigger role on the team and therefore they increase their level of play.

Sutter was quoted a few days ago that he feels that the captains should be the younger players because the Lowry's,Conroys and Yelles will lead anyways. And I agree with him.

Congrats Jarome!
