A Debt of Gratitude is Owed

to Chris Rockstrom, or whoever saw Henke as an opportinty at 205th in the 2000 entry draft. Henke has taken the torch, and I swear devotion to Lundqvist. ALL HAIL KING HENKE!!!

It was a great pick...

but sometimes I think when you get up that high, you're really just picking out of thin air and are looking to get lucky.

It was luck other wise if they thought he was so good they wouldn't have picked so many players in front of him.

We got lucky, plain and simple. I covered that draft for Hockey's Future and remember how happy i was that the Rangers got Lundqvist that late. There were 3 Swedish goalies being talked about at the time - Tellqvist, Liv & Divis. A friend from Sweden had told me that Tellqvist was the best, but Lundqvist was his 2nd choice out of the 4.

Luckilly that draft had a bunch of highly regarded goalies, and i always thought that was a factor in Lundqvist not being chosen higher.

Dallas had a great draft that year, ended up taking Henke's bro Joel in the 3rd round and that was a surprise at the time.

Luck was of course a big part of it. But a great pick non the less.

I wonder how great decision it was not picking any euros this draft... Especially with how the game is developing. I am not saying that Euros will be the way to go in the future, what makes this team success as much as anything is the work by Betts, Ward, Ortmayer and Moore as much as anything IMO. But if we are looking to get some guys with top 2 lines skill, in a draft where several highly touted Euros goes 3-4 rounds later then expected my guess is that a few steals where out there and we missed them...

There was of course a few factors that played a part in not selecting 'em. Like the CBA and no IIHF agreement at the time.

Seems as though...

Sather was going after guys whose value may've been knocked down due to recent injuries. As for Euros and the way the game is played...I think there's been good success from guys from all over this year, not just skilled Euros. Heck, ex-Rangers cast-off Pat Leahy has actually scored a couple goals, and he couldn't even make it in Hartford.

Hey, luck or not, 250th pick, so what. NY should just be glad he's a Ranger. The gratitude goes out to the player and the way he's played for this team.

Luck played some part in it, but you don't just throw away a pick -- there's thought that goes into even a 9th-rounder. The decision must have been made on some sort of reasoning. Even if the thought process was "if he lives up to his full potential, we could have a real player on our hands", and the luck was that Lundqvist worked out for the Rangers, it was still a good pick. This, it seems to me, is the real skill of the Rangers European scouts, picking guys in late rounds who have potential to be special: Johnsson, Lundqvist, Prucha, plus perhaps Petruzalek and others.

Say all you will that 30 other teams passed on him for 6 rounds (some for 7 rounds), so the Rangers were lucky to get him -- at the end of the day, the other teams DID pass on him and the Rangers DIDN'T.

For the record, Sather may have been GM at the time but he had no say in the 2000 draft, it was still Neil Smith's guys.

Lundqvist was the 5th rated European goaltender by CSB and wound up going 205th overall. Don't have the exact number, but a lot more than 4 goalies from Europe went before him.

This is why drafting goaltenders high is such a crap shoot.

The Islanders drafted DiPietro 1st overall in 2000, we got Lundqvist at 205th. Would anybody here trade Lundqvist for DiPietro?

speaking about jerseys for goalies, do most people generally get the actual goalie jersey or the regular jersey with the goalie's name/number on it? i've seen a bunch of people wearing actual goalie jerseys and they alway look silly to me wearing them because they're so enormous

Its still good that we have montoya because if he plays well in the AHL and keeps his value high we can ship him off for someone nice.

We got lucky with the Lundqvist pick... simple as that..

Brodeur was a first round pick... I don't know where Roy was drafted though..
