No way in hell should Mike York be on that list, and this coming from an Islanders fan. Main reason is because he is a yank.

I disagree, I think two Canadian teams would both medal. Or at the very least, both place within the top 4. A Team C wouldn't stand much of a chance though.

While I'm kind of surprised guys like Allison, O'Neill, Lindros and McCabe weren't named, I'm a bit puzzled as to how Belfour has no shot what-so-ever.

But whatever, I doubt he'll make it, I just think that Cloutier, Raycroft and a few others would be below him on the depth chart.

Any other countries have theirs? I'm particularly interested in Russia, but all I see is a press release from the LA Kings from a week ago saying Grebs, Bure and Frolov were named to the preliminary roster. I have yet to find a full list.

Guesses

I went through and took a look to see who played in both the 2004 World Cup and the 2005 IIHF World Championships for Team Canada and started a guess from there. Assuming a 23 man roster with 3 G, 8 D, 12 F. Players who were on both the World Cup and World Championship rosters are denoted with a *.

Goaltenders (3)
-Martin Brodeur*
-Roberto Luongo*
-Turco or Theodore would be my best guess

Defensemen (8)
-Scott Niedermayer (World Cup, no World Championship, no brainer)
-Chris Pronger (Was injured for the World Cup, no World Championship, another no brainer)
-Ed Jovanovski*
-Wade Redden*
-Robyn Regehr*
-Scott Hannan*
-Open Spot
-Open Spot

Forwards (12)
-Joe Sakic (World Cup, no World Championship, no brainer)
-Jarome Iginla (see above notes)
-Vincent Lecavalier (see above notes, you can't not take him after the World Cup)
-Joe Thornton*
-Dany Heatley*
-Simon Gagne*
-Ryan Smyth*
-Brenden Morrow*
-Shane Doan*
-Patrick Marleau*
-Open Spot
-Open Spot

Who knows? Does Lemieux go? Brad Richards? Martin St. Louis? What about Maltby and Draper? What about taking Nash or Crosby along? Does that bump Marleau out? Or Morrow? Should be interesting.

While I don't know if Marleau will make it, he definately has a shot. They chose him for the World Cup team and he hasn't gotten any worse since. Why do you assumehe has no chance?

I think Roloson is definitely the best goalie left off the list. Underrated with a capital U. I'm a diehard Canuck fan who thinks Cloutier takes way more flack than he deserves, but I'd take Roloson ahead of Cloutier in a heartbeat.

A big reason for Horcoff being on the list is his play at the World Championships. In a nutshell, the guy has been great for Canada. Would I want Langkow on the team ahead of him? Of course. I'd also take McCauley over Wes Walz.

What this list shows is Canadian hockey is very healthy indeed. You could assemble a list of players drafted in 2000 or later, and they'd still thrive. Some of those players (Heatley and Nash for sure, maybe Spezza and Crosby if they continue to produce, although I'd leave the latter two off until 2010) will be there this year.

Expect to see much of the same team from the World Cup back. Only dilemma is Canada can only take 20 skaters instead of 23. Pronger and Blake will be there on D. Don't expect to see Brewer or Bouwmeester there. Blake, Pronger, Foote, Niedermayer, Jovo and Redden will likely occupy the top six. That would leave Regehr, Hannan and McCabe to battle for No. 7.

As for the forwards, Lemieux, Sakic, Iginla, Thornton, Nash, Gagne, Lecavalier, Richards, St. Louis, Bertuzzi and Heatley will likely all get spots. That leaves two vacancies, and I say it should be Yzerman and Smyth for the fourth line. Doan might also fit in well on the fourth line. Of course, injuries can change a lot, but Canada is very ready for injuries, with guys like Draper, Doan, Morrow, Marleau, Spezza, Crosby, Briere, Lindros and Kariya waiting.

Gretzky has already mentioned that Lemieux and Yzerman would both have a spot on the team if they feel they can contribute. He's leaving it up to them. Barring injury, Mario will be on the team for sure, but I have a feeling Stevie Y. might decline...

I think we could ice three teams and anyone of them win it.

Equally when we send just one, they may not medal.

All that is saying is that on any given day, a top 4 team could beat Canada, but the only reason to count out the "teams" left at home (especially team 2, whoever they are) is because they won't be there.

I think if Sid stays healthy he could make the team. If he's still top 20 in NHL scoring come December there should be a role for him on the open ice. I wouldn't want to "not" pick him and then find I'm struggling offensively. So he's my homer pick.

This list is purely for GMs and not for Canada

They are hoping the Jarome Iginla effect will play out in guys like Chouinard, Crosby etc...and they will play better if they think they have a chance at making Team Canada
