Izzy didn't play very well tonight, but he did use his strength to good advantage a couple of times which is a great sign.

I doubt that he can see the puck very well with that big contraption on his face though. Hopefully he is a fast healer so he can get rid of that thing.

Whew.. great call by MacTavish to go with the Torres line on the PP! It took a few crash and bang plays to finally get the puck in the net! Isbister was a bit disapointing tonight.. i'm going to attribute a bit of that to the gigantic football helmet he was forced to wear due to the cut on his lip. I think Dvorak and Hemsky might do some flipping between the first and second line as the season progresses.. I think our 3rd/4th lines are locked into place though!

That works too!

It's awesome that the Oilers big players are getting goals here, if Chimera, Torres, Laraque, and Izzy can all get decent totals the Oilers will have an offensive juggernaut. Anyone remember a team with 4-20 goal scorers who were that big?

While it is only one game, it's great to see Raffi Torres play very well in his first game. It was a little disconcerning seing all the negative talk surrounding him on this board while training camp and the preseason was rolling along. But as the preseason started to come to an end, he started to play better and now tonight. I told you that you guys would love Torres. He does so much on the ice, and is such an exciting player to watch even though he doesn't deke people out of their pants. He steamrolls them instead.

Go Raffi Go!

I just caught the hilights, looks like a lot of our question marks answered early:
Could Hemsky continue his late season tear? A=2 point

How would Dvorak play with his family weighting on his mind, and could he bright the offense? A=1 point

Was Torres a 2nd liner or a 4th liner? A=2 point

Could Salo step up? A=Big saves in the 3rd allowed the rest of the team to light it up

Would the powerplay produce? A=2 for 5

Could Horcoff be couted on to produce some offense? A=2 points

Could Laraque 'bring it ' this year? A=1 point and looked to be playing hard all night

Could Smyth be an effective centreman? A=2 goals

I know its early, but all the right people got points tonight, except maybe Isbister, but he could be forgiven a few games here until he heals

I thought Ferguson was a little weak on the puck and on his man but other than that I thought everyone played good. Didn't seem that I saw a whole ton of Smyth,Izzy,Dvo line but thought Izzy was strong on the puck and played pretty decent when I did see him and Smyth got two goals late. I really doubted Lowe when he said Izzy could become a Bertuzzi type but with the preseason and tonight I am thinking he can score 30Goals pretty regularly in the future(not saying this year) he seems to be finding himself a lot more often, I can see increasingly larger amounts of what he was like in that one Dallas game everyone remembers.

P.S. any word on Sturm?

Yup, and the point totals don't even tell the whole story about Raffi. His game would have been a success even if he never got one point because he was so effective physically.

Kudos to MacT for giving that line all the pp time, they deserved it!

Did you see Fergie's offensive foray?

He had a couple of good chances there, I thought for sure he was going to score.

Fergie? Offensive foray? Isn't that an oxymoron.

I did see him get a little.I think? but he had too much trouble controling forwards coming in and going to the net he just doesn't have the muscle for it.

just got back from the game... and I've gotta say, the Fuhr retirement ceremony was amazing. I don't know if they mentioned this on the tv broadcast or on the radio, but when Fuhr was first introduced, they showed the video package (similar to Kurri's, going over his career accomplishments, 5 stanley cups, etc.)... crowd is going nuts... so after the video ends, the arena is completely dark, except for the orange backlit fog at the one end of the rink... everybody's waiting for Fuhr to emerge through the fog and make his appearance...

and suddenly the spotlight hits the net at the other end of the rink, and Fuhr's standing in goal, full equipment on.

a "moment" if there ever was one.

Honest injun, he even camped out in the slot and let a quick one-timer go on net.

He is far from dominant but he always seems to get just enough done, I don't think I can recall ever saying "Fergie cost us that game". Or even a lot of goals.

IMO he is a reliable #6 d-man, as a #7 he's pure gold for a small market team.
