Go to the new official website and it has news that the Avs will be featured on ESPN's Documentary series, "The Season." Last year's subject were the Detroit Red Wings, and even this Avs fan found the two-parter thoroughly entertaining.
But I hope those ESPN cameras following the team around all year wasn't the reason the Wings were summarily embarrassed in the postseason...
I can't wait to see the episodes, because they show so much behind the scenes stuff, but I just have this nagging feeling like this is a bad idea. It just seems like it takes away from the focus of the team with all those cameras around making the players think about something else besides the games. The general concensus last year was that there was no way in hell the Wings would have done that last year if Scotty Bowman was still the coach, and there's a reason for that. I just hope they prove me wrong. I'll still enjoy the hell out of those two episodes though, can't wait. Would have been better if Roy was still here though, I would have liked to see his behind the scene preperation and intermision footage, but then again there's a lot of reasons that I wish Patty was still here.
its a distraction the players can easily overcome. generally, the players realize how important it is to win the cup this year. thats the most important factor to consider at this moment b/c it will be this team's inspiration throughout the year. i have the feeling, however, that PL will have to make one deal or two to ensure this team has all the assets necessary to be the best. there should be no excuses for losing.
Plus management wouldn't mind the extra $ after a shortened playoff season yielding less revenue and going into '04-'05 season that may yield no game revenue at all due to a lockout. I don't think the Avs are simply fullfilling a public service, I think money plays a big part.
