Athletes you hate

Everyone has them. Those athletes (in any sport/athletic venue) that you absolutely despise. Not guys you love to hate, like the player who always seems to have a good game against your team, but the person who you can't seem to have any degree of respect, admiration, or affinity for. Who is it for you?

My answer is simple: Steve Francis. As a British Columbian, the reason should be very obvious. And watching the Beyond the Glory on him tonight reaffirmed it for me. He wasn't apologetic for his actions around the NBA draft and his reaction to Vancouver. I can almost understand not wanting to play for a bad team like those old Grizzlies teams (though I still don't respect that. It shouldn't matter where you are. You are getting paid to play a game for a living. Even if it's in the middle of nowhere, suck it up and earn your millions.). However his problems weren't about playing for a bad team. It was about the city. He didn't want to play here because it was too far away from his family. Bull****. What if he played in Los Angeles or Seattle? It's still going to be a 9 hour flight from his hometown. But he wouldn't have complained there.

Of course, then he got traded to Houston, and history repeated itself. He started under Jeff Van Gundy, and in listening to the interview with him, he sniveled and whined about having to play the game differently (more like a real point guard, I might add).

Steve Francis is the epitome of exactly what is wrong with professional athletics today. He is selfish, whiny, arrogant and has such an inflated ego that it makes me really hate him with a vengence.

The sad thing is that he's a great basketball player. I want to like him because he has the kind of electrifying skill that everyone can enjoy, but that pathetic level of self-importance just won't let me get past the person to like the player.

So if that doesn't prove I hate Francis, I don't know what will. What about you guys?

I know this is a non-hockey board but Keith Tkachuk takes the cake (and eats it since he is fat). Bud Selig is not an athlete but his arrogance and mistreatment of baseball has taken the sport off of my radar.

There are a bunch of guys who think they are above the law and get out of trouble since they are professional athletes. Guys like Leonard Little (DUI that killed a woman and then another one months later), Michael Pittman (gets in trouble for beating his wife all the time), Ray Lewis (come on, obvious), and all the steroid users in baseball who forget that steroids are ILLEGAL in the US not just MLB all come to mind.

I thought of another non-athlete and its Mike Shanahan. The Broncos run a dirty "but not illegal" blocking scheme as he likes to note. He talks down to the media and always whines about officiating, the league, and anything else that makes a loss not be considered his fault.

Barry Bonds is a very hatable figure with his perceived cheating with no explanation as well as truculant attitude towards the media and everyone. I thought it was funny when he brought his son to a press conference and blamed the media for wearing him and his family down. Sammy Sosa and Rafael Palmerio also fall into the same category for their ridiculous lies and explanations for steroids. Sosa forgetting English at his grand jury testimony is unbelievable.

Mike Vick is another guy because he is still so adored despite Ron Mexico/giving a woman herpes incident. That got swept under the rug real quick and millions of people still idolize him. There are a lot of athletes who are terrible people but because they can run fast or throw a ball far are portrayed as role models. That is somewhat of a media creation but its still disappointing.

Jose Cortez. He's an arrogant , bad kicker. That kind of kicker usually leaves the league in a hurry.

How could I forget Leonard Little?

I wish someone would beat him up like Ken Hamlin.

Hopefully his next DUI kills him.

Hecht: is whining all the time in Germany, couldn´t stand him when he´s been playing for Mannheim at the age of 17, couldn´t stand him (and especially his quotes) when he was dealt to Edmonton, etc.
"I´ll play for Germany on the next WC for sure, no doubt about that" - Two weeks later Mr.Hecht isn´t in the mood to play, demoshiled a fingernail or whatever excuse he´ll find. Just stop saying "yes i will for sure" and get a cheap excuse.

Neuville: Dives a lot, plays handball here and then and has not the character to say "Yes i did dive, score with the hand" - instead of admitting scoring a goal with nothing but the hand he said it was his head although he´s been shown the replay in every angle you can imagine.
