Also, there's Hatcher+Rathje vs. Markov+Malakhov

Personally I'd take the second group, even is Derian Hatcher can't skate.

It's not nearly as black and white as that.

You have to remember that the Pitkanen that is playing this season is the team's best defenseman, on developing into a future Norris candidate. The Pitkanen that played as a rookie looks very similar to what Seidenberg looks like now, i.e., now good. You also have to remember that Desjardins is in somewhat of a renaissance. This is the best he's played in years. Comparatively, in '03/'04, he probably played his worst season.

Of course we'd rather have Markov than Hatcher, but Hatcher has been playing pretty decent the last few games. Rathje and Ragnarsson are basically a wash at this point in their careers, and Malakhov is crap. Just watch him with New Jersey.

With everything considering, I'd take this season's group without hesitation.

Because those were the exact defensive groups of those respective seasons.

Pitkanen in 03-04 was miles ahead of Seidenberg in 05-06 at this point.

Basically I was asking which defense would you prefer right now with everyone playing how they are right now (kind of hard with Rags and Timander in Sweden but they'd be similar to what they were in 03-04). Malakhov is playing like crap because he was supposed to be their #1 and he should be a #4/5 at best. I'd take him over Seidenberg or Therien easily.

Hardly. Pitkanen made plenty of defensive mistakes, was timid with the puck, and was really only a force offensively. Who does that sound like? It's Seidenberg.

Except Pitkanen also ran our PP better than Johnsson or Desjardins back then. Seidenberg is a shadow of what he was in 02-03. He can't even pass, shoot or cycle very well anymore. Hopefully he turns it around or this might be the last year we see him.

Since Malakhov was a rental, he should not be included in any comparison to our current roster. The Flyers will most likely pick up atleast 1 veteran D-man for the playoffs.

Ragnarsson and Timander both returned to Sweden so they were never an option. The only thing that bothers me is Markov, if Clarke had bought out Brashear (he could have kept Fedoruk as the enforcer), not signed Therien the D would have looked very impressive.

Pitkanen - Rathje
Johnsson - Markov
Desjardins - Hatcher

LOTN,
I think you make a few good points here. Ragnarsson and Timander wanted to remain in Europe, so short of kidnapping and forcing them to play in Philly, there wasn't much Clarke could do.

Remember that the Flyers have an Anaheim second-round pick for going with Brashear-Therien over Fedoruk-Markov. However, that might be a bit misleading of a comparison, since Fedoruk was already gone before the Markov/Rathje/Hatcher/Forsberg/Roenick payroll shuffling occurred.
