Gretzky gets a statue, we get Roenick and Kings get...
a BUST.
Are we still blaming his skates? He did trip over them during his first shift last night. Not a soul near him and he just flat out fell down. I think his Kings highlight reel will be the first five minutes of Game One in the 2005-06 season, but we'll endure him for 81 more, or until the first debilitating injury hits. J.R.'s been a solid NHL citizen for a long time, but Kings fans are seeing him in either the twilight of his career, or the twilight zone. Cue the music and pray it's the latter and that better times are coming for #97. I have my doubts.

The simple truth is that JR is out of shape right now. He got leveled last night on the PP (neutral zone) because he wasn't moving his feet. He's not in game shape, and it's going to take about twenty to thirty more games. Once he trims down a bit, and starts getting his legs back.........we can all sit back and enjoy. I'm not worried one bit, because he has too much heart and pride. I'd rather have him later on down the season anyways.
Putting last night aside, I think JR actually has been a valuable contributor both on and off the ice. He's been very good defensively, both at even strength and killing penalties. He's provided energy when asked to do so. He's not the player he once was, but he's still pretty good and provides needed leadership. Give him another 10-15 games, and I'll bet he'll put up some decent numbers too.

I'll bet you weren't "worried one bit" that Allison and Deadmarsh were coming back either.
It's going to take him half a season to get into "game shape"? Great plan - tie up $5 mil of your salary cap on a guy who didn't care enough to come into camp in shape? If he really did have as much "heart and pride" as you say, he would step away from the game until he's really ready to play.
Do you realize that the only point he has since the 4:18 mark of the first period of the first game was when he was hit by a puck that deflected into the net. He has NO assists - NONE.

This description is fine for a role player scrambling to stay in the league. When you are talking about your HIGHEST PAID PLAYER, it has a whole different meaning - it's called rationalization.
Roenick had no shots on goal last night. The #1 center is making less contributions than a first year, checking line rookie (Parros).
JR is being paid for his past accomplishments with the Hawks/Coyotes/Flyers. It seems like he forgot how to play over the course of the lockout.
And I don't care what his excuse is, as already stated, he is the highest paid player on the roster and isn't worth that $4.9M salary. He shouldn't be *****ing about losing money and the owners using their 24% for marketing and promotions.

We aren't even 10 games into the season. You don't think it's premature to criticize someone for not having a point a game? To say he's playing like a role player is ridiculous.
And as far as being the highest paid player, if I owned the team, I'd pay Roenick more than his pure on-ice value because he generates tons of media attention which sells tickets and merchandise. When Roenick speaks, people want to hear what he has to say, and that's valuable to the franchise.

The coaching staff, GM and his teammates don't give a s#!t what he brings to the team off the ice. Fact of the matter is that he is paid to play hockey, and he's been below average, at best. I am waiting any game now for him to wake up and step up in a big way, and he is coasting out there a good majority of the time.
If his play continues like this, the coaching staff has to bench or scratch him. That ignited a fire under Luc last season, hopefully it will do the same to JR.

Did I say a point a game? I'd settle for an occasional assist or a demonstration of some kind of offensive skill now and then. IMO, your highest paid player should CONSISTENTLY contribute

If this is his greatest contribution to the team, let's break out the Kingston costume and he can skate around in that between periods.

Whos expectations are you talking about?
I don't think anyone really thought that JR was some sorta savior. There was far more expectations about Frolov or Demitra then JR.
At best I hoped he would be the tough vet on the top-6. I didn't expect a all-star season from a guy at his age...
Who really thought that JR had more then 1 or 2 years in the league?
If he doesn't get better who really cares how much he makes? This is his last year on contract so next year we have room to make a FA splash if we need to. It was a gamble to pick him up but its still early in the season. Hockey is a marathon not a sprint...
I must admit that I expected more on the ice from JR. He doesn't look like the player he was in the first few pre-season games, before the Gauthier hit. Maybe he still has some lingering effects - I'm not making excuses for him. Its not like he's sucked. Frolov hasn't looked any better most nights. He needs to pick his game up.
I'm not too worried - the Kings #1 center for many years to come is going to be Anze Kopitar. I also believe that era begins next season. JR will step aside and the Kings will be freed another 4.9 million to fill holes - namely a top 2 defenseman.

You sure about that? I bet you AEG does! And that's who pays the people mentioned above. People on this board are funny. You produce (Cammy) and he should be benched. You don't produce (JR) and he should get benched. Which one is it? Every fan at Staples and at home watching TV are watching JR with wide eyes........hoping he's the savior. He's not! We have a good balanced core right now, and that's fine by me. Smolinski was also detrimental to a lot of posters here, but he played a good two-way game.
I could really care less right now about your contract issues, because right now we're fine. We probably wouldn't have spent it anyways. You could look back to the last twenty years of guys that didn't deserve the payroll they were making. Army was barely making league minimum and playing his balls off. Same goes for Avery and Gleason.
JR maybe using the Kings as a stepping stone for his future career (broadcasting), but we can also use his personality and spirit here. He's exactly what this team needed, and I love his passion for the game. Come playoffs, you'll be taking back everything you said anyways! He'll be a spark plug!.........not a butt plug!

You know that little queer in Tampa (Martin St. Louis) only has three points. He led the league in scoring last year if i'm not mistaken.
I understand that maybe JR should have came into camp in better shape. Well maybe he was in ok shape, but had a setback due to his concussion with Gauthier. This guy is a warrior. Give him some time.
He has a lot of pride, and said himself that he wouldn't start yapping until he felt he was a gamer again. He'll get there!
Maybe because we lost last night it's getting more magnified. But other players that are suppose to produce are also not living up to expectations. We need to stay out of the box first and foremost, and also have a somewhat effective PP. Frolov and Demitra haven't really worked out. So why not put the line back from pre-season.

Exactly. DT didn't pick JR up for his play on the ice solely. He has had his face plastered all over ESPN and TSN here in Canada since he came over. Its about exposure. Its marketing.
I'm not worried. We're 6-3, first in the division. How come people always find something to ***** about? We could be 9-0, and if JR had 2 goals everyone would still *****. He's got heart. When push comes to shove and the games start to count, you can bet that JR will be a presence on the ice.

Let's assume you believe everything you just said - why would you trade for him and his huge contract in the first place?

...and now you're going to explain how Andy Murray treats everyone the same? Cammalleri has 9:19 on the ice in the first game before he is benched for 2 games, but JR is allowed to show up as soon as the games "start to count".

I wouldn't really call it a trade, but more like a free agent signing. Plus a third rounder to boot.
Huge contract........understandable, but i'm happy we're not tied up long term....but I hope we re-sign him later on down the year for less money. He's a post season player.
Basically what I think it boils down to is that he's playing 'not to get hurt.' Ever since that Gauthier hit. In pre-season he was throwin the body around, and then wham! Its pretty much like I haven't seen him since.
Let's assume you believe everything you just said - why would you trade for him and his huge contract in the first place?
1. He has a one-year contract, which gives the team lots of flexibility next year.
2. Leadership and heart. If you think JR isn't having a positive influence on players like Dustin Brown and Mike Cammalleri, you're crazy.
3. Scoring. He's off to a slow start, but there is no reason to expect that to continue. Over the past three seasons, all beyond his prime, he still has averaged .8 points per game, which is good production.
4. Grit and two-way play. JR is a responsible defensive player who kills penalties, works hard in the corners and is strong on the forecheck. He's exactly the type of player who can thrive in AM's system.
5. Marketing. He brings fans into the building and generate free advertising for the team through his extremely high visibility relative to other hockey players.

Wow...........you made my comments look like pure ****!
