Sheryl Swoops becomes sports first openly gay 'superstar'

http://sports.espn.go.com/wnba/news/story?id=2203853

Just thought this was worth mentioning, don't mean to stir some kind of debate.

The article mentions how the WNBA marketed her while she was pregnant in her previous marriage.

This won't have any impact on the world of sports, and if anything it will hurt the WNBA, since their main fanbase is families with young children.

That's only if those families see gay=bad.

Personally, if I were a women, I'd totally be a lesbian. I so go after hot blonde chicks.

Actually, the WNBA targets the gay and lesbian community directly in their marketing strategies.

Probably the biggest female sports figure to come out was Martina Navratilova - and it didn't seem to do anything to hurt the sport. Granted, it's not a team sport, but I'm not sure how much difference that makes in marketing it.

Yeah, maybe Im underrating the WNBA but I think Martina Navratilova is more well known than Swoops.

I doubt it will matter anyway, maybe an extra story or two today on Sportscenter but after that the WNBA will go back to being a league nobody cares about.

Ann Wauters (New York Liberty - and many more, she plays all year long in Europe as well as the WNBA) is pretty much a superstar here in Belgium and she came out last year, but of course Swoops is on a different planet in terms of overall popularity.

Agreed.......

Just like the Sue Bird who said she will have a radio host spank her if she doesnt score like 20pts or something...... it made the news, put wnba on the map for a few days, then everyone realized, its the wnba and stopped caring.

Good for her

I doubt this will have any effect on the American Sports public at large, its a minor star in a minor sport...... beside i think it is always a little more acceptable to the public for a female to come out than a male.

Its going to take a huge all-star type player in Football, Baseball or Basketball for this to get any significant discussion started.

Navratilova is the biggest name, but Matinez and Mauresmo are also gay tennis women.

I think the fact that basketball is a team sport makes it much more important.

Most popular athlete in a team sport to "come out" for sure. I don't think this will have any impact on males coming out in team sports though. Takes a lot of guts to come out when she is this well known...good for her.

yeah at least she is being honest with herself now, keeping a secret like that had to be very hard on her

it wont make life easier on her but at least its one more thing off her mind

I would think so too. ESPN acts like Swoops is the first real star to do this. In fact, I didn't know Navratilova was gay.

Didn't Billy Jean King get outed before Martina came out? I know it hurt King's career.

Good for Swopes. I will say the WNBA is a safer enviroment to come out.

My first thought was 'When are the other 100 or so WNBAers going to come out?'.

Probably, but how many people can name a LPGA player besides Annika Sorenstam and Michelle Wie?
