Bertuzzi negotiations update

From an interview with Burke on CKNW...progress "has been made" on the Bertuzzi front and they will continue to talk despite passage of deadline. Burke's deadline is 7-10 days from now at which time talks will be cutoff until the end of the season. Actually sounds somewhat promising.

Also, Keane will clear waivers saturday at noon if nobody picks him up.

Apparently Bertuzzi's agent Pat Morris has made 2 proposals, one for a 3 year deal, and one for a 5 year deal.

The CBC announcers said that talks will continue heavily throught the night and tommorow. This is very promissing as to me it shows that both Bertuzzi and his agent want to get this thing done.

CBC said that Bertuzzi's camp had agreed to a 24 hour deadline extension.

Just before the game last night, Burke was being interviewed by Dan Russell and he said that they have extended the deadline by about 10 days.

even though the deal is not yet done, it all looks very positive...

love hearing that there is a 5-year deal being thrown around!! that would be simply awesome, and no doubt will weigh on Markus's decision of when he wants to retire as well...

either way, whatever happens, I think we can all agree that the days of talking about the Canucks not being able to keep their best players, is done....

even if Bertuzzi is dealt, and can't come to an agreement, we're already further ahead than what teams like the Oilers have gone through with their big ticket players, conceding the need to move them before the negotiations had even started.

Man, I now know what it feels like to be oiler's fan... tough losing their star players simply because they cant afford them... and everytime when they are close.. they need to trade and get young again...just wait a couple more years, they need to trade Ryan Smyth/Comrie, and then Hemsky take over as Captain and THE star on the Oiler..

5 years would simply be awesome, and 5 years would hopefully make other players, such as Nassy/Jovo/Ohlund/Morrison to sign contract extention until Bert's contract due..

we'd then can just add pieces during this 5 year window and GO FOR IT!!

all and all, IMO, its not likely.

3-4 years make more sense..

if its a 3 year deal, what does it mean?? HE accepts less money and becomes a UFA at the end???? 3 years sounds like he be just entering UFA under current CBA.

if its a 5 year deal?? what does it mean?? MORE money, and base salary increases every year??

5.5M to start
5.5-6.0-6.5-7.0-7.5M for a 32.5M?

Bert is already making 5M/year this year with the bonus factored in.. would he be looking for MORE??

Burke would already signed him, if that was the deal.

Burke and Nonis have been avoiding using the Naslund Cap as a negotiate tool with Bertuzzi unlike the previous negotiation likes Jovo. So i think Bertuzzi will get at less 6 to 6.5 millions $ to start off his new contract.

Here's how I think the deal will/should go.

1st year: 6
2nd year: 6.4
3rd year: 6.5
4th year: 6.4
5th year: 6.2

5 year 31.5 million.

Bertuzzi will definately get more than Naslund......he is the best powerforward in the game at 28 years old(just in his prime).....simply put, when Bert is on his game there is no one better with the exception of Forsberg in my mind

Similar money too what Naslund made after bonuses.. around 7 mill

I'd bet he'll get around 6.0-6.5 and after bonuses 7.5

I think he's gonna get an Iginla-like deal. I'd be more then happy with that.

Well here's a useful contribution to the conversation.

He's looking for something in the Pavol Demitra-range, maybe a little more (that's the name his agent cited). So, $6.5 to $7 million range.

I could see the Canucks and Bertuzzi agreeing to a deal similar to Iginla's, only for a longer term(either 3 or 5 years).

I could see it going down like this:

3 year contract

1st year:$6 mil
2nd year$6.5 mil
3rd year:$7.5 mil

5 year contract

1st year:$5.5 mil
2nd year:$6 mil
3rd year:$7 mil
4th year:$6.5 mil
5th year:$6 mil

If it's a shorter term deal, Bertuzzi will want a higher average pay over the length of the deal. If it's a 5 year deal, Bertuzzi will take less for the security of a long term contract. I think both deals are fair for both sides...

Thanks, yes i wasn't inquiring with regards to edmonton acquiring him, i was just wondering what sort of money he would be looknig for this year. He is one of the leagues bonifide power forwards, and a solid player.

NEW UPDATE (Oct. 11): (CBC)

Bertuzzi has sent a new offer to the canucks and he's looking for a response by the end of the weekend. I'm sure we'll hear more on afterhours.

Edit: Sportsnet reports that Morris' latest offer has gone past Burke and straight to ownership. Kypreos said that that could be a sign that they might be on the brink of making a deal.

Kypreos said it's probably a 3-year deal, with possible restructuring of this years' contract amount. He also said the figures would be somewhere in the 7.5 M to 8 M range after this year. Take it FWIW.

Edit #2: The above story about a proposal being considered by ownership was confirmed by CBC.

Apparently the proposal was sent without recommendation from Burke or Nonis too. Looks like it's up to McCaw & Co. to decide if they want to give the contract to Bert.

Oh boy, that isn't good news. Burke and Nonis have been given this job and it is a slap on their faces, if it doesn't go through them first.
Lets hope Burke's pride keeps in check.

I guess "without recommendation" does not necessarily equal "Strongly against." Maybe they're like "if you want to give him this contract fine, i wont' go agasint it, but i'm not really yippie-yah-yea about it."
