I'd do it if it weren't for Peca's salary. If it were a million less, I'd love to bring him on. He's not the same player that he was, but he'd still be great on a third line between Bulis and Begin. That line would be two-way dynamite.
I haven't watched many Edmonton games this year, so I can't be sure, but I suspect he's being miscast as a go-to centre, when he's not even close to being one in reality.
Habs might need to toss someone in to balance salary and the Oil maybe toss in a pick for that someone. Maybe something like... Peca and a 5th for Bonk and Dagenais.
Peca would be better suited to the Habs third line than the Oilers' 1st/2nd line. He was never an offensive dynamo to start, and his offensive abilities have been lessened by the injury. He remains and elite level shutdown talent though and one of the best PKers in the league.
Bonk is a more talented scorer than Peca, and while no slouch defensively, clearly not in Peca's league in that regard. The Oil need scoring, and while the Habs don't exactly need defensive forwards, Peca is better suited to the role Bonk is playing than Bonk is. I think it fits both teams' needs pretty well.
I remember this deal came up when Bonk was a Sen and Peca an Isle. It got kicked around for a while and was determined to be good value.
Good assessement, and I like balancing the salaries like that. The Habs don't take on too much salary, (I think it would be around 800K with Dagenais thrown in) and giving the 5th works.
A problem from an Oiler POV though would be that Bonk has not shown he cabable of being a true no.1 center imo. He put up good numbers in Ottawa, but his supporting cast wouldn't be as good in Edmonton. Still, he has more offensive upside than Peca and I think he would be better suited at playing a scoring role, something Peca has never been asked to do.
As for the issue of size that some Hab fans have brought up, I really don't think it's a concern when dealing with a player of Peca's caliber. He's still one of the best PKers, and shut down guys in the league. I don't know how long he signed for though. Bonk is signed for 2 more seasons at 2.394 million a year, then he's UFA.
the main reason MTL brought bonk was because of his size at 215 lbs and 6.3 feet. Peca is no where close to that. Also both of them have very good to great defensive awareness. Bonk is more talented but Peca brings the things that bonk never had and that is hart, and that is why I am still not sold on Bonk.
If I was BG I would call Savard and Gauthier and talk about real seriously.
While Radek Bonk skates slower than your local zamboni, he's no slouch and would help Edmonton. So I'd take Bonk for Peca
Problem is : What the Habs would do with Peca?! More expensive, older, not as skilled as Bonk offensively... So I would NEVER take Peca for Bonk. I'd think about it if Edmonton would add Marc-André Bergeron, but the key word here is "think".
