Grade the D-men so far

I have seen four Flyers' games to date on TV, listened to the others over the 'Net but for those who have seen most or all of the contests how would you grade the d-man individually? Pitkanan an A for instance?

I have not seen every Flyers game since I live away from the city, but in the games I have seen and from what I have read online, Pitkanen is much better than he was in his rookie season. Much more decisive and is not being caught out of position nearly as often. I think by the middle of next season he will be regarded as one of the top 15 defensemen in the league, if not necessarily by the public, then by people within the NHL.

Dejardins A
Rathje C
Hatcher C
Johnsson C/C-
Therien C-/D
Seidenberg D

pitkanen and dejardins have been far and away our best D men with Johnsson seriously being a huge let down so far he has looked all around pretty terrible, no one expected huge things from hatcher besides bobby clarke, i think he will get better when he gets his conditioning up... IF i should say... rathje has looked allright at times and terrible at others...

In my opinion Rathje has been our worst defenceman. Just does not look comfortable.

Rathje and Pitkanen looked great together the first 5 or 6 games of the season. Rathje has fallen off the last few games, but Joni has stayed strong. Hatcher has been more of a disappointment, I think.

I agree. Rathje, early on, was playing great hockey. I think he's been impressive offensively (since I thought he wouldn't provide any) and he has also shown how he can use brute strength (not physical play) to shut down his opponents. He's good positionally but his footspeed isn't the great which was apparent against Montreal and Carolina IMO. I didn't notice him too much against Ottawa.

Only 1 real bad game IMO against Carolina so I don't think he has been our worst defensemen.

i think that pitkanen and dejardins obviously have something and should continue to be peared up... not only on the PP but on regular shifts also, i understand that you want to spread your good players around but they have looked phenominal together, rathje on the other hand needs to pick up his game, he looked OK not good in the first few games, hatcher has been blah and i think johnsson was just as bad if not worse than either of them when he was in the defensive zone so there is no reason to leave him out of the bashing either

I've seen him make poor plays to be sure, but I've also seen him use his size, reach and skating very well to keep skaters from dipsy doodling right into Esche's front porch. Not spectacular, but the fact is he can controll areas of the ice very well, which is very difficult with the crackdown on obstruction and holding.

Johnson has not been bad in his own zone, but he hasnt been great either, and his production hasnt made up for his occasional lapse to warrant an A.

Eric Desjardins - A+
Joni Pitkanen - A-
Kim Johnsson - C (Injuries have hampered his skating game and offense)
Mike Rathke - B- (would have been a B+ of not for 3rd period in Carolina)
Chris Therien - C+
Dennis Seidenberg - Inc.
Derien Hatcher - B (has shown the effects of no training camp ... don't think you can give an accurate grade on him unitl Thanksgiving)
