The Philadelphia Flyers begin a five-game homestand tonight when they welcome the Washington Capitals to the Wachovia Center. The Flyers enter the set with a terrific 4-1-0 record on friendly ice.

Philly is coming off a key road win Sunday up in Ottawa. Mike Knuble scored two goals and Robert Esche made 39 saves, as the Flyers downed the Senators, 5-3, at the Corel Centre.

Philly went 3-1 against the Caps in 2003-04. Washington is 0-13-1 in its last 14 trips to the City of Brotherly Love, dating back to January 31, 1998.

Quote:
With the exception of their three long-term injured players (Sami Kapanen, Turner Stevenson and Keith Primeau), the Flyers had all but one of their banged-up players back on the ice yesterday, including Robert Esche, who will start in goal tonight, Michal Handzus and Brian Savage.

Kim Johnsson still is bothered by a groin injury and did not skate. According to Ken Hitchcock, Johnsson will attempt to skate today and decide if he will play based on how he feels.

Quote:
Philadelphia spent the offseason putting together a potential Stanley Cup contender. However, the Flyers will have a decidedly different look when they host the Washington Capitals

Much has been made of Philadelphia's high-profile acquisitions like Peter Forsberg and Derian Hatcher, but when they take the ice on Thursday, the Flyers will have three rookie centers in the lineup.

Not many NHL teams have that many first-year players at such a critical position, but coach Ken Hitchcock has no qualms about using Jeff Carter, Mike Richards and R.J. Umberger.

"The future starts (Thursday)," Hitchcock said after practice Wednesday.

SEASON SERIES: Flyers, 1-0-0.

LAST MEETING: Oct. 1; Flyers, 7-6. Stefan Ruzicka scored the only goal in the shootout to give Philadelphia a wild, come-from-behind victory over Washington, which squandered a 5-1 lead.

ROAD/HOME RECORDS: Capitals - 1-4-0 on the road; Flyers - 4-1-0 at home.

not to nitpick but how is the season series 1-0? that game was in the preseason.
anyhoo im a bit shocked Esche is starting tonite. figured this would be a good time to get Frank a start and get his confidence back after that fiasco against Carolina.

Need to hammer them tonight, although I see a close one,

Flyers 4 - Carter, Gags, Zeus, Forsberg
Caps 2 - Emminger, Ovechkin

The Flyers are going to win this one. It might be easy with the kind of depth we have to dismantle them but Ovechkin is going to be a beast.

Also, are you sure Esche is starting tonight?

Flyers need to do a few things to be successful and they have to do with intimidation...
A) Guys like Hatcher, Rathje, Sim, Knuble will have to physically intimidate Cassels, Sykora, Friesen and especially Ovechkin. Push him around, lean on him and finish solid hits on him. Drape a shadow (Handzus?) all over him all night long and watch him dissolve under the pressure. Pray to God that Bundy actually plays some semblence of physical hockey and uses his size to clog up the defensive zone.
B) Score a couple early goals and keep attacking throughout the game. Win footraces, battles in the corner, dominate with a solid cycling game down low. Caps have some pretty quick forwards than can get out to the points and other perimeter shooting areas. Washington's defenders won't win any speed-skating competitions so the offense has to take advantage and create chances with good puck movement from the low slot and behind the net.

Miller actually fractured a finger on his blocker hand during the game-day practice.
He is out 4-6 weeks.

If anyone else wants to make some GDT's just say so and i'll put a hold on myself.
I'm in another timezone so it's easy to put them together a bit early for NA users
who wont get a chance to make them since most of you probably are at work/university/school etc.

Flyers better start earning them points. Even with 3 rookies in the line up we are still better on paper. Is Therian playing?

Just an FYI ---- Sykora, Zubrus, and Bradley are all out for the Caps ----- Yonkman has returned from his conditioning stint in Hershey and Fleischmann was recalled to fill in the roster gaps.

Ben Clymer will be playing defense this game -------- Caps plan on dressing seven defensemen.
