Staal Signed ... likely to start year on 1st line

http://www.caneshockey.com/news/news.asp?articleid=1109

Staal led all NHL players with 7 goals in 7 pre season games. He was centering a line with Ron Francis and Jeff O'Neill on his wings late in the pre season and was getting first unit power play time.

Not that he won't end up in a less high profile role as the season wears on ...

Yess. He went first overall in my keeper league draft on Saturday - to me. Took Staal, Sejna, Dustin Brown and Matt Stajan. All 4 could be in the NHL this year.

I'm glad he is signed and I'm happy he is doing well but pardon me if I'm not all that thrilled that he is starting out on the top line.

Me neither, but if he is having trouble I think he will be bumped down to some of the lower lines, or at least I hope he is.

Personally I like the idea of starting him on the top line if he has earned it. May as well give him big minutes and see if he can perform. Carolina has an opening at C (with Francis moving to the wing) I say keep Staal there as long as he earns it.

With Staal in the lineup what do you guys think the lines will be for the start of the season?

I don't follow the Canes that close, but from what I have heard, I would guess something like this:

Francis/Staal/O'Neill
Cole/Brind'Amour/Vrbata
Bayda/Vasicek/Murray
C.Adams/K.Adams/Svoboda

Maurice and radio guy Chuck Kaiton keep saying Murray/Adam/Adams is one definite line. And Svoboda/Vasicek may stay together. I almost drove off the road when Chuck said Francis would move to LW to accomodate Staal. Not the best move, imo.

From what I can gather:

Francis -- Staal -- O'Neill
Vasicek -- Brind'Amour -- Cole
Vrbata -- Adams -- Adams
Svoboda -- Murray -- Boulerice

Koltsov's got it ... at least for starters.

Vrbata has been with the Adams boys for the last couple of days in practice and it appears he will indeed open the year on the third line, while keeping his role on the point of the 1st power play unit.

The fourth line will once again be a mish mash and Murray will probably get spot duty on other lines and on the second power play unit.

For those who have actually seen the games, or those who have access to more local information, how has Vasicek been adjusting to playing on the left side?

Vrbata is on the point? Who else will play there? Will Hill be the top PP guy on DEF?

I hope not.

My best guess would be Danny Markov.

So far the top power play unit has been:

O'Neill/Francis/Staal up front
Markov and Vrbata on points

The second unit looks different for each game because of the lineup changes, but will probably include a changing collection of these guys:

Brind'Amour and Cole with Vasicek, Svoboda, or Murray mixed in to play the half wall or clog the net depending on the feelings of the staff
Hedican and Hill on the points

That first unit will likely stay the same unless Hill get insanely hot on the point (read ... starts hitting the net on something better than one quarter of his shots), and/or Staal cools off. Francis, O'Neill and Markov you can count on all year unless they're hurt.

As for Vasicek ... he has really surprised me by transitioning to the wing fairly quickly. His style of play is vastly better suited to Cole and Brindy than Vrabata's would be, and he's been woring with Cole in the corners VERY well. I'm not sure how much he'll produce in terms of goals because he hasn't really found a lot of shooting opportunities while on the wing as of yet ... but he's got a decent little wrister that he can get off in traffic, so I'd figure he'll score some once he gets comfortable.

That lineup would be the smart move. Hopefully Staal gets off to a quick start and then if he tails off and has to be moved down he and the coach know he can play on the first line if injuries necessitate.
I wouldn't be surprised if he does so well he cements a spot on a scoring line.

I can tell you one thing for SURE. He was Carolina's best player in all three pre season games they played in Raleigh ... and by such a HUGE margin over the nearest forward that it's not even funny.

Even if he can't carry it through a full season in the real NHL, at least the kid has shown exactly how good his A game can be.

Right.

With the Staal and Vasicek moves on the top two lines, Bayda was looking like fourth line fodder despite a really strong camp. Since he's still got a lot of upside, the club felt like he was far better off in Lowell getting top six minutes than wasting away playing a few shifts here and there in Raleigh.

I think you'd see Bayda back with the Canes before Brendl or Kurka for example. Probably the first forward on the re-call list.

I think that Ronnie Franchise still can play pretty good at left wing... He was pretty good at sharing that spot with Mario on one of the greatest NHL lines ever: Francis - Lemieux - Jágr
