IMO it's an easy choice, one man that stands head and shoulders above everyone: Niklas Lidstrom. He's the ultimate professional, on and off the ice, nothing he can't do, and rarely makes an error.

2nd would be well.. I personally think Mike Modano just barely ahead of Sergei Fedorov. Not too fond of Forsberg's defensive aspects personally, though he Mike and Feds are very equal, my ranking is more or less based on preferances. Joe Thornton is on the rise, but has some ways to go, and since I prefer complete players, neither Naslund nor Bertuzzi would be among my top 10. I have Peca and Lehtinen ahead of them rather easily.

Chris Pronger is my darkhorse, if he can return to 2000/2001 form, he could challenge the king himself, Lidstrom for top honors, he's that good.

And in net ofcourse Martin Brodeur, with Turco and Hasek as his closest competitans..

Again, according to his peers, Naslund is the most outstanding player in the league.

More acurately: according to a plurality of his peers (no idea if it was a majority or not), Naslund was the NHL's best regular season performer last season.

This does not mean that they consider him the best player in the NHL.

Lidstrom and Forsberg are 1 and 2, in that order.

Personally, I consider Lidstrom the best player in the NHL, regardless of position. I can't think of one negative about his game. He does everything at a high level, and does so with a virtually spotless reputation. As for forwards, I'd be inclined to say Forsberg, although his unsportsmanlike conduct from time to time tends to tarnish my opinion of him a little bit. Other than him, I'd say Modano.

No one has scored more goals than Markus Naslund in the last 3 years. He is the captain of a top team. Seriously you guys must not watch this guy.

My top 10: (no goalies)

1. C Peter Forsberg
2. D Niklas Lidstrom
3. C Joe Thornton
4. C Mario Lemieux
5. R Todd Bertuzzi
6. R Marian Hossa
7. L Markus Naslund
8. C Sergei Fedorov
9. C Mike Modano
10. R Ziggy Palffy

Naslund is a great offensive player, who happens to be well liked. I don't think that qualifies him as the best player in the league. Shoot, you don't even rank him that high. Why he would be ranked ahead of a guy like Fedorov or Modano is beyond me.

Of course they do, they also know that Naslnd/Morrison/Bertuzzi are all flukes, the Canucks are a one line team, Naslund leaches off Bertuzzi, Bertuzzi leaches of Naslund, and Morrison leaches of both, and if you split these guys up they would be playing in the AHL right now.

It's amazing these guy are lurking out on the internet and not writing for some magazine or on TV.

This is why I ranked Naslund higher than Modano and Fedorov:

Over the last 3 seasons:

Naslund: 129g 140a 269pts
Fedorov: 99g 121a 220pts
Modano: 95g 151a 246pts

And in 2000 the Canucks were no where the team they are now or that the Stars or Wings were/are. I think Naslund has done more than those two over a 3 year span, and that's usually my guideline on these sort of things. They are both better players defensively than Naslund, but just the sheer amount of points that Naslund was able to get more than them on worse teams gives him a higher ranking for me.

Why just the last 3 seasons and not look before that? Ah that's right, Naslund wasn't much before he arrived in Vancouver. While Mike and Sergei were consistantly putting up a ppg ever since their rookie seasons.

But comparing the 3 by points is clueless, here are some more statistics why Naslund isn't even in their league:

Over those 3 seasons:

Mike Modano: +74, finishing in the top 10 in Selke voting all 3 times.

Sergei Fedorov: +47, finishing in the top 10 in Selke voting in 2 of the 3 seasons

Markus Naslund: +26, never ever had and will be considered a top 100 Selke threat.

And Markus doesn't even play vs the opposition top offensive units, and has never shutdown anything. His plus minus isn't much, but that little bit is already grossly inflated by his offensive prensence.

Markus Naslund is a prime goalscorer, and a good one at that, but he will never be confused or mentioned allong the names of Mike Modano or Sergei Fedorov.

I would agree that Vancouver hasn't been as strong as Dallas or Detroit, but it's not like Naslund has been playing with stiffs. I just don't think scoring what 23 more points than Mike Modano over a three year span makes up for the deficiencies in his game.

not only that... fedorov didn't get first line ice time... and was also used on defense.

mario lemieux wins everytime! he can get a rag to score points... easily the most dangerous player in hockey.

Forsberg is overrated, thornton is a better player. lidstrom is a great defenseman, not the best player in the league. and dont make me laugh with the fedorov > naslund talk. Naslund is MVP quality, not a floater with a nose for the net. watch fedorovs stock drop during his anaheim tenure, he rode a powerhouse detroit team to stardom.

Right because things like defense, clutch play, and maturity arn't important.

A perfectly valid opinion, I just hope you don't think someone like Thorton or Naslund is a better player.

Quite possibly one of the dumbest statements I've seen outside of a Habs trade proposal.

I happen to think after this year Mr. Hossa of the Senators will start getting some serious consideration. Until then I got to go with Lidstrom and i'm one of the ones who happens to think Sakic is a much better player than Forsberg anyways.

2nd place would go to Mr. Modano of the Stars. A more complete player you will not see. At one time I had Mike and Sundin pretty equal career wise but over the last 3 years Mike has been a total complete player.

3rd place would go to Mr. Lemeiux he can by himself beat a team (and this year he will have to)
