Tonight's Game

Looks like the Flames forgot how to play defence tonight. Sutter won't be happy with the sloppy, lazy play the defensive zone. Turek can not be faulted at all tonight. He had no chance on any of the goals. And the team isin't going to win any games when Chris Clark is the best forward on the ice. The big line was very silent tonight. And play Saprykin next game!!!!! Get Lowry on to the 4th line, or in the press box. He's too friggin slow.

For a team as offensively challenged as the Flames, there is no excuse for sitting Saprykin and playing Lowry. Also, Lombardi played a solid game.

Any word on the forward lines? I'm pretty sure it was McAmmond - Conroy - Iginla on the first, but who played on the others (I only caught the game on radio).

The defense seemed to be this though from what I could tell....
Regehr - Leopold
Lydman - Ference
Warrener - Gauthier

Lines for the most part

McAmmond-Conroy-iggy
Lowry-Betts-Kobasew
Gelinas-Yelle-Donovan
Oliwa-Lombardi-Clark

Defence cost us the game tonight. Way to many mistakes and hopefully Sutter can straighten them out. We better play a lot better on Sat. vs San Jose.

I agree with the Regehr - Leopold pairing, but wouldn't it make more sense to have Lydman and Ference who more offensive minded D men, paired with Warrener and Gauthier who are more stay at home types?

I would rather see:
Regehr - Leopold
Lydman - Warrener
Ference - Gauthier

He had an average camp. Sutter said that Lowry, McAmmond and Gelinas outplayed him. It's clearly a message and a challenge to Saprykin. I'm sure his poor conditioning results in camp also played a role. Since Oliwa took a penalty that cost us and we didn't score more than one goal I think Saprykin will draw in next game and Oliwa will sit.

But don't read too much into it if you're a big Saprykin doubter, the upside is still there for this kid to be a 1st line NHL forward. Hopefully with Sutter's tough love approach the kid wakes up and seizes his opportunity.

Not really much could be read into that as we needed a centre with Reinprecht injured and Lombardi is the only other one on the roster. He isn't competing with Lombardi for a role or a roster spot, they play two different positions.

Oliwa and Lowry did play ahead of him though and that can be judged and noted since they are all LWers and are all competing for a job at the same position.

Ference Lydman
Leopold Regehr
Gauthier Warrener

Defense isn't bad but past your 1st line, you have nothing. And I thought we were a one line team in Vancouver. Shean Donovan couldn't even cut it in Pittsburgh. Lowry on your third line? I suggest Sutter pick up Todd Harvey or some other waiver wire guys. Otherwise it'll be a long season for you guys and another year with no playoffs. That's got to change, we need Calgary and Edmonton in the playoffs.
well first off, I'm not going to disagree with you in the sense that our forwards still need some work.

but if you put Reinprecht in the lineup, and assume the Saprykin benching isn't permanent you see lines like this....

McAmmond Conroy Iginla
Gelinas Reinprecht Kobasew
Lowry Yelle Donovan
Saprykin Betts Clark

Is that great? no of course not, but I'm not sure Todd Harvey or other waiver guys make it better. Look at Harvey's stats last year, and his 1.3 M salary, and who does he replace? I agree Donovan has hands of stone, but that's not why he's on the team, and Lowry makes 250K!I don't see how adding Todd Harvey makes us even 2 points closer to the playoffs actually

Well as strange as it may seem I kinda agree with those d-pairings. I think Lydman and Warrener were the best defensive d-men and Ference played offense and Gauthier really didn't do much IMO.
