Just curious, but what is the order for breaking ties in standings?

First it's most wins, is it head-to-head record after that?

There were at minimum, 2 instances of Modano clearly diving. Nothing called during the game. Wonder if he'll get a letter....

1. Wins

If still tied...

2. Points obtained in games against tied teams

If still tied...

3. Goal differential

Dallas has a VERY favorable schedule all month long. If we sneak out W's tonight and Saturday, that'll go a long way to keeping us up in the standings. Face it, if we got to play ANA twice in a row, I think we'd be taking both of those games as well given their current state.

So according to ESPN, we are still first in the division

Correct. We've taken 4 of 6 points from Dallas, hence the reason for it.

tsn puts us at 6th for some reason. well, either way, 3rd or 6th, its a pretty scary drop when considering how competitive the west is

Most automatic standings tables can't do the "on the fly" calculation of head to head if tied, and can only go by sorting on something else, like overall goal differential.

(BTW, I thought the next tiebreaker was goal differential _specifically in head to head games_, not overall goal differential?)

I provided the watered down version.. if you want all the gory details:

Playoff Tie-Breaking Formula

At the conclusion of the regular season, the standing of the teams in each Conference shall be determined in accordance with the following priorities in the order listed:

a) First place in each of the three Divisions seeded 1, 2 and 3.
b) The higher number of points earned by the Club.
c) The greater number of games won by the Club.
d) The higher number of points earned in games against each other among two or more Clubs having equal standing under priorities (b) and (c).
NOTE: For the purpose of determining standing under priority (d) for two or more Clubs that have not played an even number of games with one or more of the other tied Clubs, the first game played in the city that has the extra game (the "odd" game) shall not be included. When more than two Clubs are tied, the percentage of available points earned in games among each other (and not including any "odd games") shall be used to determine the standing.
e) The greater positive differential between goals scored for and against by Clubs having equal standing under priority (d).

I stand corrected -- the ECHL tiebreakers are slightly different from the NHL ones on that point.

I wouldn't count on it. They were shut out by St.Louis last night.

As long as they can save all of their great performances for the Kings division foes I am all for it.

are the Stars even that good...i'm more concerned with a SJ surge...I suppose DAL has a great goalie, a good top line, and some good skating euro's....but other than in the case of Turco cathcing fire, i dont fear them much at all

Right now the Sharks stink. Unless they are purposely playing awful to lull everyone into a false sense of security they are not a team the Kings need to worry about.

Except for the fact that we play them 8 times and they seem to have our number every time we play them.

They just seem to pump themselves up for games with us. But when you look at some of the teams they have lost to (Chicago and Columbus) it is just embarrassing. They even struggled to score a goal against Anaheim. They had to wait till OT to get one.

Lets not also forget the Sharks historically get stronger as the year goes on. The furthur we can distance ourselves from them now, the better. They will close the gap as the years goes on. You can count on that.
