Myers was good, never great. He was projected to be the new Chara which was always dumb

Trying to turn him into Chara was dumb instead of refining his game to highlight his strengths

That makes no sense (unless you're saying they're tempered because he's ONLY played in a few games, but I don't think so). Not a huge deal, but you clearly misunderstood my post.

Yeah, he was more like tall-Campbell but people seem to jump immediately to height comparisons.

Not as smooth but yes that was his game. Myers was a decent player who had a great rookie reason. It happens. He got overused on a declining team and it took him a few years to realize what it takes to be an NHL player with his off ice training.

I think he was finally figuring it out when he got traded and continue to do so in Winnipeg. Of course, now he's banged up and injured a lot. Ironic.

Forcing or 'encouraging' him to put on that weight killed his game. Why couldn't they just let him grow into the unique player he was?

Frankly I think it was the Philadelphia playoff series. There was a scrum in front of the Buffalo net, and Myers ended up riding a flyer down to the ice (Hartnel?). He then just socks him right in the mush.

Ruff never saw past that moment.

I always thought his ceiling was a tall Brian Rafalski.

Tall Rafalski? You mean a Rafalski standing on the shoulders of another Rafalski.

This is my concern with Guhle: Right up through his draft year his offense was exceedingly meh, sub .5 PPG. I don't know how much of that was Prince Albert keeping him in a can. With PG he's filling the net, although you'd expect more apples from a puck-mover. But still, almost PPG with PG.

Do you want him to make the jump to Buffalo to learn how to be a 5-15 Bret Hedican, or does he have the game go to Rochester to play #1 PP and learn to run that? Does he have the skating and physical tools, yeah. Can the organization wait for that? I don't know.

Considering that series was after the first of many off-seasons where Myers gained weight too quickly for his joints, the organization was already pushing him in the wrong direction.

You run him through the paces in camp and pre-season and see how it goes. The thing that should alleviate any worrying is his skating ability. When you skate like that, other things tend to fall into place. I'd attribute any scoring spikes to several developmental factors, but they'd all stem from the skating, which is why I'm cautiously optimistic he's fully legit.

I saw what you did there.

Pretty sure it was Mike Richards and I always think of that series when ppl would complain Myers was soft.

If we go into the season with McCabe/Antipin/Guhle on the left side and Bylsma behind the bench, I'm hopping on the Fire Murray train real quick.

Is the LD ok if they fire Bylsma?

Borgen decided to stay in college.

Likely good enough to make the playoffs under a different coach but surely nothing that inspires confidence. I won't be happy with it but unless he also keeps Bylsma I won't immediately call for Murray's head.

They're not great no matter who is coaching, but there are teams with D as bad or worse than ours on paper in or legitimately vying for playoff spots right now. NYR (McDonagh, Skjei, garbage), TOR (bunch of meh), BOS (Krug is basically their only decent d-man at this point). With a different coach, our D isn't so bad as to prevent us from making the playoffs. It's not good enough for a deep run, but it's good enough to get us there.
