Sykora would make a lot of sense in Edmonton and the Oilers have the budget space to add his contract to the mix (he's only due to make about $2.35 million for the rest of the season). I wouldn't be surprised if Lowe offered a mid-range prospect and a pick for him...

Not sure how he is dismantling this team, after all they are on a 8 game losing streak and are going no where quickly. In my opinion Burke has decided to build for the future. He is a good GM and will make decent moves.

guys with salaries that far exceed their ability have almost no value in the new NHL. Fedorov is a heck of a player but got traded for nothing (apologies to Tyler Wright's mom). Marchant is a very usefull player but gets waived through the league.

Sykora is 4 years removed from his last 60 point campaign, has 11 points in 22 games now, and is ufa after this season. He may be on the waiver wire in the next couple of days as nobody will give anything for a guy who won't make a difference and is getting 3.1 mill this year.

No way Burke does a Sykora deal without eating some salary in return ie - Sykora and his 3.1 mill contract for the useless Igor Ulnov and is 800k contract.

I think Burke would be lucky to get an offer that high.

Sykora's value will be at it's highest at the trade deadline after most of his salary has been paid.

A playoff team will take a chance on a former 30 goal sniper with a prospect/picks package.

Well that depends on whether Burke wants to pay most of the rest of Sykora's salary to get a 5th round pick instead of a 7th round pick. Really Sykora has almost no positive trade value because so few teams want him unless a lot of salary goes back to Anaheim (which Burke does not want). The Oilers are one of a very small number of team that need a top 6 winger AND have the cap room to absorb Sykora's salary.

I agree 100%. I think people may EVEN OVERPAY. A guy who can score with no strings attached(UFA) would be very attractive come playoff time.

5th round pick? What are you talking about.

at the trade deadline teams will be looking for players like Sykora who are UFA's this summer.

Rentals have higher value at the deadline than players with contracts for next year.

A 3rd rd pick and a midlevel prospect is the minimum a Sykora will bring back at the deadline.

I don't think Burke has any clue about what he is doing.

But will Burke wait that long? If there is a chance making team better, to get back into playoffs race? Hes a competetive guy... and we have only seen 1st quarter of the season.

Huh? Going nowhere quickly because they're on an 8-game losing streak? Yeah, okay. Atlanta went on an 8-gamer, Edmonton on a 7-gamer, and Boston is currently on a 6-gamer, and San Jose is on a 6 or 7-er as well, and all of those teams are far from out of it. The Ducks could easily rebound from this, as could Boston and San Jose.

And ANA would pay about 70-80% of Sykora's salary to obtain that? Is paying 2+ million worth that return? I don't think so.

The Almighty Burke of Anaheim is either going to cut the fat of Sykora's contract by obtaining something of little value now (financial savings) or find another player on a multi-year deal that fits into his master plan long term.

I would say the latter because dumping both Federov and Sykora (+ Rucchin in the offseason) might not sit well with the fans/media.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Sykora dealt sooner rather than later. A team will likely want to see if they can develop chemistry with their centres and Sykora, and Burke isn't one to sit and wait.

Also I wouldn't be surprised to see Konstantin Koltsov or Rico Fata in Anaheim. Burke will probably peruse the waiver wire diligently.
