Good, Bad & Ugly: 11/22

Good:
-Mika
-Mika
-Mika
-Briere
-Big Al
-Mika
-McKee
-Timmah (for turning his game around. On the ice for the OT PK)
-Did I mention Noronen???

Bad:
-Jagr's whining
-Vanek not on the ice for the 3rd period PP (unless I missed him)
-Nylander being wide open on the side of the crease for the tying goal
-Not getting the 'W'

Ugly:
-Ruff putting Drury in the shootout.
-Mika's groin strain
-Rob Ray on the shootout. I'm adjusting to Kevin Sylvester instead of Brian Blessing, but Ray is just grating on me.

Good:
Mika's play.
Pyatt/Mair/Goose.
Another notch in the PP belt.

Bad:
Running around in our own zone, trying to clear.
Sound on Center Ice- boy did that broadcast suck. And one of the few times I get to hear RJ and Jim...(or NOT hear him, as it were...)
Mika hurt??

Ugly:
What the hell was Ruff thinking? Drury???? Drury????
Jagr. I'd love him if we had him, but *dammit I hate him in Rangers colors.

Your boys played a good solid game. They put up a lot of shots. We hit the post four times, but hey, horseshoes and hand grenades, right? Take the point and move on with the season.

Oh, and by the way, I'd love to have Tomas Vanek in the Rangers organization. Watched him on TV a few times in his college days. He's gonna be a special player in the NHL, in my opinion.

We had one of those "hit the post a half dozen times" games real early in the season.
First game maybe?
We know what how it feels. What comes around goes around.

Exactly. I can't beleive we're calling for Ruff's head. Lindy may have had a hunch.
Sometimes it's good to go with your gut. What would we have said if Drury scored in the shootout? Most of us would think the move to put Drury #3 was ingenious. okay, not quite ingenious but you get my point.

I'll be the first to add Grier's physical element to the "good". Minus-one or not, I thought he played well tonight.

Toni Lydman was pretty solid tonight. Teppo continues to be steady-eddie on the back end. Mika played fantabulous.

More good: The look on Paul Gaustad's face whenever he's out for a goal.

Also for the good, Jagr's balance and on-ice vision. The guy makes things happen (obviously).

The bad: The scoreboard at the end of the game. The Sabres deserved to win.

Ugly? How about the front row knuckleheads who are fascinated with banging on the glass whenever play comes remotely close to where they're seated. I've never understood this phenemona. These guys are right up there with "cell-phone-behind-home-plate boy".

"Hey honey, watch this." BANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANG. OK, we get it Chachi. You like to play with the plexiglass. Now settle down and enjoy your nachos. You've clearly impressed your chick.

Except for a couple of exceptions, hitting goal posts tends to even out for most teams over the course of an entire season.

Also, I don't see why everyone's calling for Lindy Ruff's head, either. Noronen injured himself during the game, and it was evident the way Straka was able to take advantage of Noronen's right side during the shootout that a change was imminent, otherwise the Ranger shooters would shoot towards the same spot all night. It was the right move by Ruff. If you really need to blame someone, blame Biron (although it wouldn't be fair) for not being able to make a better effort. He spent half of the third period warming up. I know it's not like being in a game facing shots, but as I said before, take the point and move on. The Rangers could've put this game away many times, but didn't take advantage. It happens.

the good:
jagr's classy move to skate over and shake gare's hand after the ceremony, i was both suprised and impressed
pk in the 1st period (a handful of shots on 4 pps)

the bad:
connolly was not his sharpest

the ugly:
goaltenders in the shootout, not only were they getting scored on, but the save attempts were awkward and didnt come close (0 tipped pucks on 5 goals by my count)
gripe at drury's shot, but weekes barely kicked that away while reeling backwards
point being, all 3 goalies looked shaky in the shootout

The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly 11/22/05

The Good -

- Mika's amazing save in the second period --- unreal
- Drury connecting on a nice mis-direction passing play by going topshelf
- Grier's hit on Kaspariitis after he'd run Briere... very impressive
- The continued play of the Mair-Gaustad-Pyatt trio, they were by far the best line the Sabres had 5-on-5
- Timmmmahh on the penalty kill was a stalwart
- Seeing Gare and the Alumni and getting just how much it meant to Danny to have this honor. Attaboy Tickets.

The Bad -

- That Mika gets hurt and a cold Biron goes into the shootout. There was a lynchmob mentality taking hold in the stands since few if any knew that they could only make the move in case of injury.
- The yahoos who don't understand not to walk in the aisles during play. Get down you fools!
- That the Rangers come out with a win in a game the Sabres played very, very well.

The Ugly -

- No Campbell on the late man advantage. Lindy went ultra-conservative and has the non-shooter Numminen on one point and Kalinin on the other. It seemed like a perfect spot to put a guy who's been redhot.
- Drury in the shootout. Vanek, Timmah, even Max should be the selections before the Mouthguard Mangler. Lame.
- The change on the winning goal --- Pyatt comes on for Briere, but Connolly and Kotalik can't get to the bench. In the meantime, the defense collapses low and leaves Nylander open.
- Watching Renney put Jagr over the boards every time the Vanek-Roy-Afinogenov trio were on the ice without the puck in the Rangers end.
- Watching Roy checking his own players, getting in their way and generally looking like the weakest link on that line.
- Not enough ushers and we see Mrs. Gare (Danny's mother) tumble on the carpet.

Drury DID score a goal you know. He shouldn't have been out there for the shootout in my opinion but whatever, he didn't play bad.

More good:

-- Gare's not-so-subtle plug for a return to the Blue and Gold.

Explain please.

I didn't see the game, I'm just reading through.

I'm honestly glad Mika's looking good out there, but you're blaming Biron somehow who gets in there on a SO without stepping on the ice before and then giving up goals to solid SO guys like Nylander and Jagr.

*note: I saw some Ranger games, and I think every one of their shootouts.. Nylander and Jagr beat the goalie pretty much every time, but I think Nylander has 2 posts and Jagr a post and he broke a stick once on the shot. Go figure.

And Drury was that awful the entire game? Or is he in the "ugly" just cos he missed in the SO?

Bad:

I didn't see the game.

BTW, if awards were handed out at this point, I'd give the Hart to Jagr.

Interestingly enough we hit 4 posts in the first game too (I actually forgot about that but our color sommentator mentioned it). I don't know what it is. Not using it as an excuse, just saying how wierd it is. It's a pretty big coincidence.

P.S. You're a Sabres fan? I thought that you were a Red Wings fan that was just sticking up for the Sabres. Why do you have a Wing in your avatar (didn't look to closely on who it was, Yzerman?)?

Edit: Guess it IS Yzerman.

Jagr had a stick broken in the first shootout. Then I don't remember which one was which, but one was a post on I believe the exact same move as this, yes he had the goalie beat, and another one he had the goalie beat but I believe he hit the side of the net. It's pretty wierd that he was 0-3 before this game.

Highlights are up over at the NHL site. I find it interesting that Grier's hit STILL doesn't look either like the flying charge/boarding call some have mentioned, nor is his elbow out.

What's up with Hecht? He was pretty good for you guys in 04, but he looked awful yesterday. Didn't make anything happen offensively, and seemed to actually get in the way a couple of times.

Hecht flourished in Buffalo with Briere and Dumont last season. He does his best work when digging in the corners for playmakers. But Ruff, in his infinite wisdom, decided to pair him with Drury and Grier for the better part of this season and forced him into a defensive role. That, and he got his new contract and seems to be coasting a bit now.
