GDT Carolina @ Dallas 12/2/05

@
We need to continue our great road trip tonight! This is going to be a mighty tough stretch from now on, and the Dallas stars arent exactly an easy team to beat. Right now Turco has returned to the top of his game, and we are still pretty beat up. Tverdovsky (I finally was ably to spell that without looking it up!) is dealing with post concussion syndrome and Wallin is still hurting. Yikes. This should be a great matchup of 2 teams that are both playing to keep the first place title in their respective divisons. We need to keep an eye over our shoulders though, because TB is quickly sneaking up on us, and the 3 games in hand that we have wont do us any good if we dont get the points. Get caught up on your sleep this weekend because those 8:30/10:30 games will be KILLER! (Atleast I can study for my finals BEFORE the games....cause If I dont do that, I wont study at all )

Stats:

STANDINGS:
Canes - 33 points, 1st place, Southeast Division
Stars - 33 points, 1st place (tied), Pacific Division

TEAM LEADERS:
Canes -
Staal, 18 goals, 18 assists and 36 points
Mike Commodore, 47 PIM

Stars -
Jere Lehtinen, 12 goals
Jason Arnott, 15 assists and 25 points
Steve Ott, 66 PIM

SPECIAL TEAMS:
Canes -
Power play: 18.1 percent (28 for 154), 13th
Penalty killing: 78.6 percent (107 for 136), 28th

Stars -
Power play: 17.6 percent (29 for 164), 16th
Penalty killing: 82.8 percent (130 for 157), 13th

GOALTENDERS:
Canes -
Martin Gerber (10-5-0, 2 SO, 2.45 GAA)
Cam Ward (6-2-1, 0, 3.67) (N&O has Ward as probable starter)

Stars -
Turco (14-6-1, 1, 2.60)
Johan Hedberg (2-1-0, 0, 3.90)

ROAD/HOME RECORDS:
Canes - 7-3-1 on the road
Stars - 8-5-1 at home

INJURIES:
Canes: Left wing Ray Whitney (groin) and defenseman Oleg Tverdovsky (illness) are day-to-day. Defenseman Niclas Wallin (wrist) and center Josef Vasicek (knee) are sidelined indefinitely
Stars: NONE.

Games on FSN at 8:30, and radio station 102.9.

(These colors are just right for Christmas.)
LETS GO CANES!

Thank you for the GDT!! I am always surprised to see Modano nowhere to be found on the stat leaders for this team. His game has really declined the past few years. Projection was that Whitney was going to be back tonight, can anyone confirm that? I wouldnt mind seeing Ward get the start. I think he is a lot like Brodeur, the more he plays games in a row the better he gets, which is why brodeur gets like 65 starts a season.

Mike Modano has 21 points in 24 games, is first in the NHL in take aways and has a defensive responsibility no other first line center has. Contrary to what the stats make you believe, he's far and away been our best player. He should be a strong contender for the Selke trophy while being close of averaging a ppg. He's flying again..

That said, I expect the Stars to come our flat, and begin their comeback a little to late; 5-3 Canes.

FWIW ... no Whitney for this one, though he might play Saturday night in Phoenix. Ditto Tverdovsky, who looks to be out awhile. Wallin is a maybe for the end of the road trip, but out tonight.

Can someone explain this Tverdovsky injury to me? Post Concussion syndrome? I remember the play when he was hit in the facemask/front of helmet with the clearing attempt. It is not like it was a slapper, the guy just turned around and was wristing it out of the zone. This is the most ridiculous long term injury I have ever heard. Is this guys body put together with toilet paper and toothpicks?

This is old news for Oleg. While in Jersey he sat out a long time complaing of PCS. The sketchy thing is NJ medical staff said it wasn't PCS and they didn't know what his problem was.

I am not impressed with Oleg and wouldn't mind seeing his moved, but his heafty contract is going to make that difficult.

We can't while he is hurt, but once he's healthy JR should start shopping around.

i take it youve never taken a puck to the head then. taking a puck in the face is never a joke. i saw the play, and he got clocked in the face. its a very obvious concussion play, especially if he has a past for it. if it was one of those phantom ones, where it was a body check that didnt involve head contact but gave him a concussion anyways, i could see the people who have never had one being confused how it happened - but not when he takes a puck to the face. its as as obvious as it gets. iwas surprised they didnt make more of it when it happened on the telecast. it was a clearing attempt, it had plenty of juice on it....even if it was a wrister.

i also think people are being hard on him, his style fits perfectly with the new team, defensive shortcoming withstanding. we have a whole bunch of old ufa's on d this season, he's one of the only guys we have signed for back there through next year. he is by far the most skilled defender we have and when everyone is healthy, we're more than capable as a team to withstand his occasional blown coverage. i would take him over ozolinsh any day, oleg desperately wants to be a good defenseman - which i was never sold on with sandis.

The only upside to Oleg's game is his speed. Hutchinson, since he has come back, has been very impressive on the PP. He shows good vision and is much better than Oleg there. Deffensively, I think Kaberle, Wesley, and Ward are much more capable than Oleg.

i thought hutch looked more lost than oleg in his own end, and his coverage gave up a breakway the other night. oleg isnt there to be a passer as much as a shooter, the one thing our pp truly lacks. kaberle is the best passer, then maybe hutch - but oleg has the bomb and its needed. i also suspect if brindy had taken the puck to the head, it wouldve been considered a much worse injury around here.

i think hutch's two biggest problems are his skating and his awareness in his own end. i have truly begun to question his acquisition for a third rounder, which seemed a high price at the time for someone who was primarily a minor leaguer. i also thought commodore wasnt really worth a third rounder either, but he has proved me wrong for sure. i hope hutch does the same, because he isnt a good enough pp qb to be a pp specialist. he has to be good enough to play 5 on 5, and he hasnt been up to this point. oleg despite his messups has played very well 5 on 5 - i think much better than was expected.

as for wes/ward/kaberle...are they all coming back next year?

Well ... remember that not only is Hutchinson coming off of a looooooong layoff, he's also coming back from a hip flexor injury. It's one thing to shake off some rust, and quite another to do so if you're not really skating all that well. I think he'll improve as his mobility returns to where it was in pre season ... and as noted, he looks really good on the point of the power play. He's really the only "traditional" point man on the roster ... a guy who looks to bang the puck on net and play for some rebounds.

it seems like Hedberg gets the starting job tonight....so if Turco comes in after it's 4-0 Canes the stars will win 4-5 in SO
if Hedberg stays it'll be 8-2 Canes

I swear if I hear "Gerber makes the save....rebound" or "..No call.." in the 3rd period as much as it seems to have happened in the 1st or 2nd periods, I am going to bed.

Hedberg is amazing tonight.

I promise you its Hedberg because he is making some fantastic saves.

I think we just got the first goaltender interference for the year. They just waved off a goal that shouldnt have been I think. Brindy hit Hedberg outside of the crease, and the puck rolled behind Hedberg....then there was mass confusion...

Hedberg has gotten the crap knocked out of him tonight.

Oh, no, I'm not doubting you. Yahoo is prone to make mistakes.

Well, looks like Thornton is working out for SJ so far as they shut out the Sabres and ended there 10 game losing streak. He set up Cheechoo twice.

edit: JWill is heating up Hutchinson is getting those points again.....god I love the depth on this team

Ok, that was kinda weak.

On Modano's shot, it looks like it skidded across the goal line and Gerbers stick tapped it over and then his foot kicks it out. Does that count as dead when it touches his stick or did we just score yet another own goal?

What a horrible call on Modano's goal in the shootout. Puck hit Gerber's pad and should have been whistled dead.

They were robbed, plain and simple. Gerber made the first save and knocked it in on the rebound.

its a goal guys. gerber knocked it in him self. there was no reason to blow the play dead while the puck is in motion. the only possible arguement was that the pucks motion was no longer going forward. that wouldve been tough to call, as the puck was going along the goal line. sideways motion is generally allowed. either way, it should stand imo.

great comeback, if not more than a bit lucky. i watched from the 2nd period on, and we got killed in the 2nd period, and didnt do all that much in the third really. we put two goals in off the defensman, so we were blessed just to get to ot. awesome ot though, and we shoulda won it then. williams deflection on the tying goal was a beautie - not often a puck flying about 2 ft up gets deflected up to go in.

hey, we got a point we surely didnt deserve, so no reason to be upset.
