Nashville's starting goaltender tonight, Chris Mason, got injured in warmups, so Brian Finley gets the nod (first NHL start) and HEALTHY SCRATCH defenseman Jamie Allison puts on the pads and dresses as the back up!!!
In 1982-83, the AHL St. Catherines Saints were forced to use forward Normand Aubin in goal for 47 minutes (gave up 5 goals) but he didn't start the game thinking he'd be in nets.
Finley has given up 1 goal through 1 period, and I'm pretty sure Barry Trotz will stay with him no matter what the outcome as long as he stays healthy, but it's a funny shot seeing Allison on the bench as the backup.
Why not put Allison in there just to rest Finley. He's obviously shaky, why not let the rest of the game go to a guy who wont ever be in that situation again?
Mainly because at that point the coach is sending a message to the team that he's given up on them. If you were a player on the preds, and your ONLY goalie was pulled in favor of a defenseman... game over.
