Apparently people are more infatuated with Joe's name than with his play on the ice. Gimme a break with this silly, reflex stuff.

They certainly are among the worst:

- Neely & Vancouvers first round pick (Glenn Wesley) to Boston for Barry Pederson

- The Canucks acquired Naslund from Pittsburgh for Alex Stojanov

Really.

He does have a lot of hype for a guy who's had one great season.

1) Cam Neely, 1st rounder for Barry somebody.... (that just tells ya how brutal that trade was!)

2) Ken Dryden for Guy Allen, Paul Ried. It just goes to show, patience are a must in the game of hockey....

3) There isnt really a third that jumps out for me, in the long run, the Thornton trade could look lopsided, and the Luongo trade already looks godly awful....

Joe Thronton was a franchise player, and Boston did one of the most idiotic move ever.

You dont trade a franchise player for a "good dmen" and 2 average player( like the montreal trade where montreal got a good forward as rucinski and 2 average players like Kovalenko and Thibault.

Im a habs fan, but i honestly feel sorry for the B's fan because i already felt the same way when we lost Roy..."ROBBED!"

I don't think the trade is THAT bad

It's not like Boston got nobody out of this

Parrish+Kvasha for Luongo+Jokinen takes the cake for me in recent memory

The worst trade ever was Lindros for $15 million plus Forsberg, Ricci, Hextall, Duchesne, Huffman, Simon and 2 draft picks that turned inot Thibault and Nolan Baumgartner. 7 for 1 is not a good deal.

Lindros was great with Philly, won a Hart and led them to the final but it was way, way too much to give up for 1 player.

the lindros trade to philly from quebec has always seemed pretty bad to me. i don't remember it exactly but iirc it was something like:

lindros for forseberg, steve duchene (sp?), ron hextall, the pick that got t-bo (who was used to get roy), the pick that got mike ricci + $$$ .

knowing what i know now i wouldn't do lindros for forseberg striaght up. imho colorado doesn't win those cups without this deal.

EDIT: you beat me to it cup2006sensrule . and knew more about it to boot.

He's a very good player. Just not deserving of a collective bj from HF Boards. The deal wasn't that lop-sided.

For the Leafs it was

Tom Kurvers for 1st rounder (Scott Neidermayer)

Or Steve Sullivan for nobody, they put him on waivers

Perhaps not but Thornton is far and away the best player in the this deal. Personally I don't see how it makes the Bruins better. You'll have a hard time convincing me that this trade will make the Bruins better going forward. Had they maybe gotten Marleau or a first round pick then I might think so. We haven't even seen the best out of Joe Thornton yet and he has the ability to be one of the best players in the game. His game needs him to play with an edge and I believe the Bruins have put a large chip on his shoulder after this trade. He is not pleased with the Bruins head office.

No. I didn't say that. He's had quite a few very good seasons under his belt, actually.

I've said before that I believe he's a top-10 center, but some people here are acting like he's the best player in the NHL. If you go by his best season, then he's "elite," but if you look at his other seasons, then he'd be closer to a "very good" level player who averages about a point per game. I think the truth is somewhere in the middle. Better players have been traded for less.

I usually judge them by whether it made sense at the time or not. It's a hell of a lot to give in hindsight because Forsberg obviously turned out to be better than they had imagined, but I don't think it was too crazy at the time. Imagine trading your team's #1 prospect, a couple draft picks, and some usefull but not star players for Sidney Crosby. If your team isn't going anywhere in the near future, why not take the chance?

Especially since Lindros was a dominant force from day 1 in Philly, I can't blame them TOO much for that.

Trades that make absolutely no sense at the time they're made are the worst one IMO

No love for the Gilmour trade? Guy almost won the Leafs a cup and had 238 points in his first two full seasons as a Leaf. Hell Gary Leeman didnt even get into the pants of the wife of any Flames player.

Darryl Sittler for Rich Costello. There was a 2nd round pick, but nothing justifies cutting the heart and soul out of your team for a college kid before they actually produced in the NHL.

Phil Esposito, Ken Hodge and Fred Stanfield to the Bruins from Chicago for Gilles Marotte, Pit Martin and Jack Norris.

Montreal trading Ernie Hicke to Oakfield for first overall pick that ended up being Guy Lafleur.

I agree that it was an absolutely horrible deal for the Islanders, especially now that Spezza has made good on his potential. However, you can't factor Yashin's contract into the trade. At the time, he didn't have a contract at all, and had Wang not been so insistent on locking him up for a decade, he'd likely have signed for a lot cheaper.

I think that seeing the Thornton trade in this thread is just a total overreaction.
