I think Andrew Peters did it in a fight against McGrattan earlier this year.

Gratton #46, Philadelphia.
Mair #22, Buffalo.
Peters #76, Buffalo.

If Gratton "owned" Mair then you have some seriously low standards for what you consider winning a fight, GKJ. There may have been three punches connected that entire tilt.

Peters wiped the floor with Gratton. I'm guessing you were just confused?

I don't get the rationale of him "running" away from Brashear. He laid the hit on Carter, Brashear came over and they jousted, resulting in Donald's stick hitting the ice but not his gloves. If he's so worried about protecting Carter, take the 2-and-10 extra and pummel Mair for a legal check. For most of the game Brashear was pretty much a non-factor, so his chance to do what he gets paid for came and went and some blame Mair for Brash being too worried about the implications to go? I don't get it.

As for Mair, in his weightclass, he's a pretty spirited lefty. I've seen him lose to Neil -- those two have history going back years, including Mair coming off the bench in LA when Neil was ragdolling one of the King's European players and getting a 10 game suspension. As it was he and Gratton threw some and I would give Gratton an edge. But that was by no means an "owned" situation.

Old School WHL code, that. There are players who came up through the dub that do (or rather did) do that.

Also, Ballard took his lid off prior to a fight early this season too (with Iginla I believe) , which makes me respect that kid even more.

Not to go off subject here, but who did Miller grab the puck for last nite? Any idea? Did he want it for himself, as a "I really am the starting goaltender now, *****," kinda thing?

It may have been his first NHL shootout victory.

Yep. Was praised by Grapes for it too.

The only thing that got owned tonight was Niitymaki's groin on the Afinogenov goal.

During one of the intermissions, they showed that Miller had a name on the back of his helmet, Matt (?). I didn't catch exactly why he had the name there, but I'm thinking the puck could be for him...

It said "Matt Man." RJ and JL said something about being a sick friend/relative that Miller wanted to honor.

I remember an Islanders game a while ago (like '94). I'm fairly certain the fight was Bob Sweeney vs Kasparaitis. They spent a long time sizing each other up and during so Kaspar unfastened his helmet and set it on the ice. The announcers got a good chuckle out of it.

I don't know why I remember that.

Isn't that an extra penalty (at the least) in the NHL now? Fighting with a visor on?

But how awesome would it be if he left the visor on and somebody punched straight through it! He might have a broken hand, but Iginla would look like a jackass.

Gratton did not owned Mair but Mair did not owned Gratton, they both unloaded some good punches I thought, if anything in the end of the fight I saw Mair really tired and out of gas while Gratton kept pushing.
I'd say Gratton give up 30lbs to be in that fight. Not bad for a rookie.

Gratton: 210 lbs listed
Mair: 208 lbs listed

Evenly matched. Nobody owned anybody in that fight, it was a big hug contest.

The old rule was a double minor for instigating if the instigator has a visor. I can't get into the NHL.com rulebook at the moment to verify if it still is on the books that way.

I think you have Mair confused with Peters. Against Peters he gives up about 30 lbs in size.

Yes, you are right, I am sorry. First fight he gave up around 30 lbs which was a even fight both landed some good punches but Peters got tired in the end. Second fight Gratton was winner.
