After missing a game with the stomach virus, Sami Kapanen was back on the ice yesterday and is expected to play tonight against the Thrashers. Ken Hitchcock didn't want to elaborate, but for the second time in 2 weeks, he had Donald Brashear practicing as a defenseman . Chris Therien was out yesterday with the same symptoms as Kapanen. Might be fun to see who skates out on the blue line tonight.

I'd love to see Niitymäki vs Lehtonen. Too bad it's not going to happen.

Ed Moran wrote it, i think it's more likely we'll see Kapanen on D.

I like the idea, not that happy with Richards on the 4th line though...

Eager scores 2 goals in 1 game and he is immediately placed on the 2nd line? Although I do love seeing both Savage and Sim on the 4th line.

I don't know what to think about Brashear playing d. My intial instinct is that I don't like it. To play the 6th d-man spot, why not bring up John Slaney? At least he has experience playing defense. Or, since Kapanen is back, put him back there. I think I would rather see him teamed up with Johnsson instead of Seidenberg though.

(Sounds like the flu bug is about to go through the lockerroom as Therien is the 2nd guy with the symptoms. I guess the Flyers didn't get flu shots this year?)

I would expect that if Kovalchuk sees Brash on defense, he is going to be licking his chops, which will likely happen since Atlanta changes lines last since they are the home team.

I hope Niittymaki has his 'A' game tonight. He's going to need it.

Thrasher fan doing some scouting and wanted to pass along props to the Lion of the North for the gameday thread. Looks awesome and must have taken quite a bit of time. Just wanted to pass along that I appreciate the effort.

As to the game? Reading that your defensive pairings may be a little jumbled due to illness makes me feel a little more confident than I was before entering this thread. I never like playing you guys and the overall record dictates why.

What can you expect from Atlanta tonight? Well, in the past two games against struggling opponents (NJ and Mtl) we dominated defensively. Played some excellent team defense and Michael Garnett made the big saves where needed to pitch back to back shutouts. We did give up a lot of shots to the Habs, but few real scoring chances. It's interesting to say when you have guys like Hossa, Kovalchuk, Savard and Kozlov on our team, but our best line over the past couple weeks has been Slater-Holik-Vigier. They're hustling, shutting down lines and providing the occasional goal. highly effective. The fact that Hartley gets to match lines tonight is another plus for us. It'll be interesting if Hartley matches them up for Forsberg/Gagne all night.

Anywho. I'm lucky enough to be in the house tonight and looking forward to the game. Here's to hoping its a good one.

hadn't looked at the GDT yet to notice that this Brashear experiment was noted up here...

1) i'm pretty sure that Hitchcock is seeking out methods to give me a heart attack.

2) i hadn't considered his inability to go offside from defense... but i don't think you're giving him enough credit. as said in Snatch, "never underestimate the predictability of stupidity."

3) i'm having visions of Ilya flying in off the wing while Brashear is back there playing defense...

Kovachuk? Hell, Greg DeVries could fly down the wing on Brashear if he's at defense.

I'd much rather see Jones or Slaney back there than Kapanen or Brashear. Kapanen is competent, but he takes too many big hits for my liking.

Impressive work by the thread starter, moreso for getting the Atlanta lines right then the fancy pics.

I'll be at the game rooting for the home team.

Why do you say that? Aside from baiting Brian McGratton in the Ottawa game that led to a goal, Brashear has really added nothing to this team all season and that is at his natural position. I can only imagine how bad he is going to be on d.

Hitch must have no faith in either Jones or Slaney to resort to this move.

I really doubt Brashear will play defense. This will be a tough game - Atlanta is playing well starting with their goalie.

Anybody else think Hitch is sending Richards a message by putting him down on the 4th line with two of our worst forwards? I have not noticed him playing poorly but then again I haven't really noticed him playing period.

Where have you been? Jones has been out with abdominal surgery since early November and is scheduled to play his first game with the Phantoms this Friday. He was the first call up in October when Hatcher couldn't play and he played very solid.

Sorry, I haven't been following the Phantoms this season. It's certainly not a reason for your first post here to be confrontational though.

So that is the reason why Jones hasn't been recalled, how about the reason for Slaney?

I'm not sure, but i think Slaney is only signed with the Phantoms, and not with the Flyers.

I just hope Flyers will not get penalized 5:3 on a weak call. Still very bitter about that game..

i'm not sure that is possible... could be wrong about that, but i'm sure he has a two-way deal.

EDIT: not on the nhlpa site... interesting.
