OLD vs. NEW

There were some of us who were skeptical that our rookies could come in and pick up where our favorite vets left off. I for one was one of them but I drew up a little comparison to look at.

Old
Tony Amonte 38GP 10G 11A 21pts +2
Jeremy Roenick 32GP 6G 7A 13pts -2
Mark Recchi 36GP 11G 19A 30pts -18
John LeClair 27GP 6G 11A 17pts -9

Total: .248 goals per game, .609 points per game

New
Jeff Carter 36GP 8G 11A 19pts +6
Mike Richards 34GP 5G 14A 19pts +10
R.J. Umberger 28GP 6G 8A 14pts +6
Ben Eager 13GP 2G 4A 6pts +3

Total: .189 goals per game, .523 points per game

Was the ever so slight decrease in offensive potential, and temporary loss of team identity worth the savings in cap space?

I was just talking about this yesterday with a friend of mine. You forgot about not bringing Zhamnov back as well. The only one of the 5 players who is even making any kind of argument that we should have kept him is Recchi. The rest of the guys--Roenick, Amonte, Zhamnov, and Leclair--all need forks stuck into them because they're done.

I think Clarke did everything right when deciding not to bring those players back, even though it may have LOOKED bad when it happened. The reason we lost in the ECF's in 04 was because we were a team of tired old men. It was time for a change.

Add in the additions of Forsberg & Knuble and subtract Zhamnov & Roenick and I think you'll have your answer.

I'm not big on +/-,but I'll take +25 by a bunch of low cost up and comer rookies, who, are playing quite well NOW,over -27 by a bunch of over-the-hill,overpaid underachievers.Plus we saved a trillion dollars.

There's also several factors that figures can't quantify such as energizing the rest of the roster for the game; the impact that bringing these guys up has had on the effort that the Phantoms squad; and the defense that these young guys play that LeClair and Amonte couldn't/wouldn't play. Over all I'd call the additions a definite plus.
