Hasek the Greatest Player ever?

Which player was so dominating, excuse the pun, for longer than he has been? For over ten years, every game he plays is determined by him and his play - is he the most impactful player the NHL has ever seen? Has he performed the longest as the best player at his position?

There is a strong case for this.

There is a strong case that he should be a household name in NA and on SNL and Leno etc etc.

Nonsense about playoff leadership aside (no NorthAmerican is gonna listen to a non-North American for leadership in the playoffs - which is the strange knock against Jagr), there is nothing in his resume to suggest he isnt the greatest player ever.

Why was he even playing in the "I"?

He may be joining Orr and Lemieux in my book as the greatest player ever. And Jagr is not far behind especially if he wins another Art Ross.

arguably, yes

even gretzky needed an all-star co-cast to win the cup

but... i personally don't compare goaltenders with skaters, but i'd put him top-20 for sure, higher than some put him, and if he keeps up the stellar play through the regular and postseason this year and maybe the olympics or next year, then top-10 in my books

certainly one of the top-5 goaltenders of all time. doubt that and look stupid.

I have never liked Hasek with his dead fish impressions... I like standing goalies.

Hm... Top-3 goalies all-time IMO, maybe the best of all time.

It's tough to compare goalies to skaters, but IMO, Gretzky's way out on his own, then Mario, Orr... Howe, Messier... Hasek's top-10, top-15 probably (IMO), both him and Patrick Roy.

He isn't even the greatest goalie of all time IMO, but definatley paired with Sawchuck right below Roy.

I would say he is easily top 10-15 of all time however.

Why 143 and not 142 or 144?

Hasek is great, perhaps a top 5 - 10 player. But, as you well know, Gretzky is still #1 Howe is still #2 and Orr is still #3. Hasek is between 4 and 10 somewhere.

I can't believe i'm reading a debate on wether or not he is the best. Hell no there is no way he is even close to be the best hockey player ever

In theory - yes. Simply because of the position he played. For those 5-6 years, I don't think there's ever been another player in the history of the game as dominant. Gretz, Orr, Lemieux weren't going to consistantly win games by themselves when their teams were being out-shot 42-16; whereas Hasek could.

But I don't think it's fair to compare position players to goaltenders.
Even if Gretzky, Orr, Lemieux, etc. were more dominant at their position than Hasek; Hasek or even Roy would still have had more of an impact simply due to the position they played.

Hasek wasn't even the greatest player of the past twenty years, how could he have been the greatest ever? I don't even think Hasek was better than the other two "great" goalies of his era, Roy and Brodeur. Yeah, he's on par with them, just like Eddie Belfour is. But to call Hasek the greatest player ever is like calling me the sexiest man alive--close, but clearly not correct.

Let's just make a list of guys who you'd want over him, and you can see he's not the "greatest player ever". Gretzky. Lemieux. Jagr. Those guys alone I would not heisitate to take over Hasek any day of the week, and that's just going with the recent greats. That's leaving out guys like Howe, and Orr.

Personally, I don't think Hasek cracks top ten.

I might include him in the top 5 goalies of all time. Probably not though.

Hasek was/is pretty amazing. Not the greatest player ever, but in his prime, just a tad below Wayne, Mario, Bobby, et al.

True, but so did Hasek. Gretzky carried an 88 point team to the finals, Hasek carried a 91 point team... they're pretty close.

Of course, Hasek and Glenn Hall are the two greatest goalies of all time.

Tretiak was the greatest goalie of all time.

I would put Patrick Roy and Martin Brodeur ahead of Hasek

Dom has 6 Vezinas, 2 Harts, 2 Pearsons, and Olympic Gold. It's not his fault he played the vast majority of his career on teams incapable of winning.

He'd certainly be challenging for wins (or at least in the neighbourhood) if he had become an NHL starter before the age of 29. International politics, and being stuck behind Belfour for a few years kinda took him out of the running for that

I don't know about "all-time" best as a player, but I do know about goalies...

Not in order...:
Roy, Hasek, Brodeur are the best goalies in the last 20 years. That's all I know.

IMO, Hasek is definitely TOP 5 GOALIE of all-time.
