Proposal to win Calgary the Cup

I have no clue what would need to happen to fit this under the cap, or if it does, but players can be waived, or picked up if required.

This is a "push them over the top" and make them the instant favorite trade proposal for Calgary.

To Calgary:
Sundin
McCabe

To Toronto:
Phaneuf
1st

...this one isn't as bad as the Brett Hull for Ramage deal, but it should put them at the front of the line for a cup win this year.

Sundin would waive his no-trade clause for a cup, and is a top 2-way elite 1st line center.
McCabe is the front runner for the Norris this year, and offers serious offense from the blue line.
Phaneuf is on his way to being great, but, if the tradeoff is a cup win, it would be a cheap price to pay. Stanley doesnt come around as often as teams would like.

Well yeah, any team that got Sundin and McCabe would be a contender.

I don't think that the Flames need Sundin or McCabe enough to give up Phaneuf....

they don't really need a dman at all... and they don't need a #1 center making as much as Sundin either... they could pick up a cheaper soon to be UFA center.

Would the leafs do that? I mean Phaneuf is a machine and I would trace a lot of players to get him, but your teams best forward with your teams best defense man, not to mention he is the teams captain. Even so, I am not sure if I would do this from a flames perspective.

Sundin / McCabe salary and age come into play as well.

Frankly, I wouldn't do this deal if I were Calgary.

You're deals are often so strange. I remember when you suggested the leafs sign like 10 star UFAs/Buyouts.

naw, that was a 'technically could happen' scenario. ...this is more of a what would you give up to win the cup, and that I think the Leafs need to rebuild from the bottom up.

...and you cant sign a UFA in the off season to help you win a Cup this year!!

This trade sucks for both teams.

McCabe is not a Norris contender. At all.

This is just a terrible trade.

McCabe isnt worth anything close to Phaneuf, and Sundin is worth considerably more than a mid 20s draft pick.

Neither team would be likely to consider that deal.

I thought, win or lose, you wanted Sundin to retire a Leaf.

Nothing guarantees you the cup that's one thing. The other is that Phaneuf will be their Nik Lidstrom for the next 15 years and that they can win the cup without that trade (I picked them in the preseason). You may need to make a tweak or two but that's about it.

When you came within one goal of winning it the year before and your team only improved I don't know why you would worry about making that trade.

give him credit, at least the value is fair. if this trade went down, i think fans of both teams would conspire to assasinate the GM's though, so forget it.

The value isn't anywhere close to fair. McCabe is having a great year (at least offensively) but he is also an impending UFA. Phaneuf, meanwhile, is one of the best young players in hockey. Not only is he having an incredible impact at both ends of the ice, but he is cheap and years away from UFA status.

Right now, I'd say that Phaneuf's trade value alone exceeds McCabe and Sundin by a considerable margin.

Phaneuf is about as close to untouchable as you get meaning his value is sky high. The only players with higher value are Crosby and Ovechkin. No way Calgary makes this trade, no way.

Phanuef>>>>>>>>>>>>McCabe

McCabe is a guy who will score two goals on the power play and cost you three goals even strength, I don't want guys like that on my team (i.e. Jovanoski). Sundin would be incredible to have but how do we afford him?

Gotta love stupid outragious trade proposals. Then after they get McCabe and Sundin, the Oilers trade Hemsky and a 2nd for Redden, Spezza, and Heatly, best BOA ever!

Gotta love people that call others stupid and then spell outrageous wrong.

The value of one player is nothing compared to the Value of winning a Cup.

Brett Hull as a rookie was traded along with Steve Bozek to the St. Louis Blues for Rob Ramage and Rick Wamsley.
In hind-sight, it looks like a bad trade as Brett Hull became one of the best goal scorers in NHL history. But at that time, the acquisition of Wamsley and Ramage helped them win their first Stanley Cup in 1989 against the Canadiens
(partial quote)

this trade which did happen was much worse than the one I've proposed. ...think as recently as the trade that brought Iginla to Calgary in the first place ...Dallas won the cup, but gave up Iggy to do it.

Both those trades resulted in a Cup win.

Last (played) season 2 unexpected teams made it to the finals, don't expect it to happen this year.

You are underrating McCabe's play in his own zone.

Wow, finally a person who sees things as they exist in the real world.

...but, after the Flames win the Cup, the fans will be calling it a brilliant trade since it gives them everything they currently lack, and lets not forget a few years ago when TO traded away Clark to get Sundin ...people were screaming for the GM's head, but now Sundin is the Leafs, and the trade was a steal. (though, still no Cup in Toronto, though Quebec\Colorodo did win a few, although no direct thanks to Clark)
