My in law is playing for the Sheffield Steelers. They don't like it there much at all but they do give you a car, pay your rent and cover your tuition entirely.
Wow. Rent and car is pretty much the biggest two living expenses taken right out.
I guess they are eating out and drinking a lot to be finding it expensive..
what do you know about Ollie Betteridge, 16 year old making his debut for the Panthers tonight.
21 goals 10 assists in 8 games, as of December 15th for Nottingham U16's, 7 goals 8 assists in 6 games for the U18's. Doubt he'll get any shifts but still a good experience for the kid, hopefully they will give him some games for the Lions in division 1.

Well most consumer products are massively expensive here compared to the US and Canada, when I went to Texas I was amazed I could buy a Gatorade from a vending machine for $1, it's £1.50 for a Lucozade in most vending machines here!
Economists use the price of Big Macs to measure purchasing power parity in different countries, it basically measures the value of the currency and how much you can buy with it in that country and since Mcdonalds is in basically every country they use Big Macs. The UK has the 7th highest Big Mac index, while the US is 8th, and Canada is 11th.

Interesting, their numbers are impressive but those kids are all B league players. However, there have been a few good players who started at Invicta then moved to A league clubs when they got older, for example Zach Sullivan and Aaron Connolly.
I'm lining Bracknell v Peterborough U18's tomorrow which should be a good game, I'm hoping I will get to see Lewis Hook play. From what I've heard about this kid he's the brightest prospect we have had in a while, maybe he should consider going overseas to play next year. I will keep an eye on him tomorrow and give you an analysis of him
Lewis Hook wasn't playing, Bracknell won 3-1. Ryan Webb continued to impress me, he does lack size but is a good skater with great hands and good hockey sense, he scored a goal in the senior Division 1 game afterwards too. Other notables from Bracknell were Ben Paynter (F) and Jordan Gregory (D) who also played in the Division 1 game. Gregory is a 95 and I think Paynter is a 94, elite prospects doesn't have their full birthday but Gregory played U16's last season so that would make him a 95. Elite prospects has Paynter as 5'10" but he was taller than me so I would say he's at least 6'. The Peterborough goalie Dan Lane was pretty good too.
Slightly OT:
I see that Rouen Dragons of Ligue Magnus (France) won the Contintental Cup.
My question is how are teams picked for this tournament?
Are teams from SEL, DEL, SM-Liga, NLA, KHL eligible?
I (sadly) don't think of Ligue Magnus as one of Europe's top leagues. But Rouen are certainly billing themselves as Champions of Europe?
Also HC Asiago of Serie A (Italy) made the final tourney?
I know Sheffield went out in the 1st round in the fall.
Thought I'd ask here as someone might know.

It's a tournament for the 2nd tier nation Euro leagues, I think the winners of each league go to it. A team from the Russian VHL was there also.
Also my team were talking about the planet ice thing on Sunday, one of the older guys says he wants planet ice to collapse so Basingstoke rink will go back to being council-owned, he says it will make our monthly subs cheaper because planet ice are greedy ***** and we will finally get the showers fixed. Someone else I know said that it will all amount to nothing and if planet ice aren't still around next year they will eat Steve Moria's jock strap
Mancihester Phoenix on their latest webcast are reporting that Planet Ice and Revenue UK (?) have reached an agreement.n
In Canada when you owe back taxes the gov't provincial or federal they just send the court sheriff to put pad locks on the doors untill you pay or they take over the business and property unless you file for bankruptcy protection with the courts.
Gone sold at auction.

Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs.
I think what has happened is its just a typical case of a company being greedy and not wanting to pay their taxes and trying to get away with it, not because they just couldn't pay.
NIC Nottingham are running another day long hockey clinic same structure and price as before on Saturday March 17th. There is also a junior level one around the same time.
The last one was great fun, even though I sucked, there was quite a range of skill levels there and the better players were quick to offer help and advice, to the guys like me who weren't anywhere near as good.

Yeah, more than anything I think it's just the huge jump from the States to Europe in basic necessities such as foodstuffs and gas which is such a culture shock. But the Steelers are covering pretty much everything else though.
EIHL has come out with an announcement that there'll be no rule changes for next year.
So it'll remain as 10 imports. I dunno........but watching some hi-lite shows where due to injuries teams show up with 11 or 13 skaters.........wouldn't cutting imports and spending the money on building a deeper player pool be better?
There's 19 teams between the EPIHL and the SNL that in which sort of a farm system or affiliate player program could be started.
I know putting bums in seats is important but how many wanna see 2 lines and 2 sets of D either?
Other than that the press release says they are expecting no changes to the set-up of the EIHL for 2012-13

The import argument has been beaten to death several times so I'm not going to say much. Some argue that if the import limit is lowered then higher quality imports can be afforded so we would end up with more ex-NHLers or high-end AHL players which might increase the standard of the league at the expense of less depth in the short-term though. However the counter-argument to this is the lower budget teams will not be able to compete because teams like Nottingham and Belfast would bring in really good imports while also poaching the best British players because they would be more important to the success of the team. The smaller teams just wouldn't be able to hold on to their best Brits because they would get better offers elsewhere.
IMO maintaining the status-quo for now is the right decision as any import rule change won't work until the teams become more financially stable.
Some teams do use a farm system to some extent. Coventry have links to Swindon, Aaron Nell was on a 2-way playing in midweek games for the Blaze when he played for Swindon then the Blaze signed him the following season. James Griffin was also given a handful of games for the Blaze towards the end of his last season with Swindon and was then signed full time this year. Coventry also loaned Swindon their backup Tom Murdy when their netminders got injured. Hull Stringrays also have affiliation with Sheffield Steeldogs, Ben Bowns has dressed for a few games and played in pre-season.
The problem is a lot of the teams in lower leagues don't want to affiliate with higher up teams because they don't like having their players poached, Invicta fans were crying because Peterborough signed a few of their players on a 2-way then took them full-time midway through the season. Some people don't care about the betterment of the sport and only want success for their team, I hate this attitude. I was talking to the guy who runs the Bristol setup and I thought he had the right attitude, he said he wants guys to progress further for the betterment of the sport and because he wants Bristol to get a reputation as a team that will be a good stepping stone to playing a higher level so they will be able to attract more players.

If you look at ticket prices for games though. Given exchange rate it'd cost me 1 loonie and 35 cents to buy 1 pound.
Tickets for my hometown Q team is $16.50......for an EPIHL game 14 Pounds for an EIHL game15 pounds,
Seems close.
No game reports from me this weekend guys, to give me a change of scenery after 3 straight weeks in Bracknell I was sent to the Isle of Wight for B league U12's and 14's. But hooray for ferry timetable refereeing mode, me and my partner got both games done in 3 hours, and even had time to get a subway
