If the search feature would work on this forum I'd look for the post where I suggested a similar idea glad to see it taking place!
The EIHA has been running the conference and England setups for years but this is the first time in my memory that Ice Hockey UK have actually done something! The EIHA chief referee is now the Chairman of Ice Hockey UK so hopefully we will be seeing one single unified governing body sooner rather than later. The IIHF only recognises one governing body per country, so the IIHF would not send the EIHA copies of the new rulebook for the referees, we went the whole of last season without them before we printed them illegally

So does this mean you guys are not certified before being able to referee? I know here, we have to take a course at the start of each season to kind of go over all the new rules, talk about some situations we've been in and then you take a written test and physical to get your referee certificate for the season.

Yes we do a course like that at the start of each year, we were talked through all the new IIHF rules, but the problem was the EIHA were unable to get hard copies of the new rulebook from the IIHF for all the referees to take with them. Ice Hockey UK are the only recognised governing body, so they were able to get them for the EIHL refs.
Is Dave Simms the Canadian guy who worked for the BBC during the Olympics? If so I wanted to drive a pickaxe through that guy's head.
Also, where do you guys go to find used equipment? Is there a site? I am still bitter and twisted over missing out on a chest protector for 25 squid because I hadn't changed my address back to the UK from the USA and the seller was only shipping to the UK.

The only places you can really get kit are from the rink stores or online. This is a decent website, it's based in Germany and the shipping costs are very low http://www.hockeyoffice.com/

No that is not Dave Simms. Brent Pope worked for the BBC during the Olympics as a colour commentator. Dave Simms works for the Steelers and Sky Sports(he's a Brummie, and where I grew up, everybody hated brummies). I don't go to to Cardiff Devils games because I don't know anyone who likes hockey. I haven't been since October. Brent Pope works for the Devils at the VIP entrance. Teams don't stream games because I gather teams such as the Panthers don't stream their games because their location is rather central, so their fans at least fear that if at least they stream their games for £7 or whatever, people won't turn up to their games for £16, that's why they don't stream games. That's just the way it is. I know I'm a bad hockey fan but if anyone sends me a PM I'll meet them at the bus stop at the side of the Millennium Stadium for the number 9 or 9A bus to go to the rink tonight to watch the Devils v Fife Flyers game. I don't want to go and explain the rules to people, I know I suck as a hockey fan, whatever.

You shouldn't have to, if you take someone who's already a big sports fan and loves Cardiff sports teams like Rugby or Football, they will get really into it regardless of whether they know the rules or not. Back in the Manchester Storm days, they got attendances north of 10,000 and I bet half of the fans didn't know the difference between a clothes line and a blue line (to quote Miracle) but man did they roar when Manchester scored.
Anyway, I find that it's easier to pick up on the rules of hockey than it is for Rugby because the announcer says what the penalty was for, the only whistles that go unexplained are offsides and icing but you soon pick up on those if you watch enough. I don't know if they do it in Cardiff but at Bracknell Bees games if you buy a match program they have a section that explains the basic rules and has pictures of referee signals.
A questionable goaltending decision, I would take Adam Goss over Dan Lane every day of the week and twice on Sunday, I'd also take Jake Pitchley and Ryan Webb over Floyd Taylor.

Cheers for that group, that place looks like a winner for sure.
Going to go to my first EIHL match tonight, Braehead v Coventry. I know it won't be the greatest skill level (probably a little better than Australia), but still looking forward to it. I just hope it is a good game and I don't get too frustrated by players turning the puck over too much.

It will be much better than the Australian league, someone I know who has seen that league reckons an English Division 1 team could win it without much trouble, I don't think I would agree with that though.
Braehead and Coventry should be a good close game, that's a good fixture to choose.

Was a good game, decent standard. Braehead won 4-3 after a late (5 seconds to go) goal by Coventry made things a little interesting at the end. A little bit of controversy near the end of the first period when a Coventry shot appeared to go into the goal and bounce back out under the goalie, all unseen by the referee and the goal judge. I thought it went in and a number of other people said they thought it went in as well.
I was in the third row almost adjacent to the corner faceoff circle, so I had a good view of it and it almost certainly went in. Would have made it a draw. But anyway, some of the play was good but on the other hand some of the guys were making basic, junior errors like passing the puck in traffic right in front of their own goal, which I was told as a kid never to do.
But all in all it's a good product and I would definitely go again.

My guys Scott Conway & David Clements making the u18!

I've been following a kid named Scott Conway ('95) son of Kevin Conway. This kid well known in GB for their U18's/U20's in the future? Kevin Conway was one of those Tony Hand/Steve Moria guys but his son is playing out of Detroit now.
He's only a '95 born forward but still could be a top 6 forward with the U18 team this season. I'd call him undersized but in D2 hockey, he'll be fine. Only got to see 1 highlight pack of his and can't find it now...
Well because there's such a small player pool, usually around half of the team are underagers. I suppose it's good because they get some experience ready for the following year, and it usually doesn't result in a case of the strong class of players gets promoted then the following year the much weaker class of players has to play in the higher division and can't compete, as has been happening to the Germans the last few years.
Honestly I think this year's team looks strong with a lot of competition for places on the team, I think promotion is a realistic achievement. It doesn't really mean that much but we have a higher world ranking than all the teams in our group.
I notice you always comment on size but I guess that's just a North American thing size doesn't really matter that much on international ice, Mats Zuccarello dominated the SEL despite how small he is

Impressed with attendances in EIHL this weekend near 7,000 to 2,500.......shame on Edinburgh for listing 0......musta been poor?
Goon movie in major push...........I dunno........seems like stereotype crap. Kinda like NA's seeing soccer like a bunch of effeminate diving time wasting wimps,
But better than this one.........The Speedy Singhs.
Yeah the Speedy Singhs one just seems incredible racist, no doubt English people will find it amusing though. Goon was well advertised but I don't think it did any harm to the reputation of the sport, I think the fighting attracts more people to the sport. I mentioned a few weeks ago that **** went down in a Division 1 game between Invicta and Cardiff (the Cardiff development team) then for the return game in Cardiff a couple of weeks later over 600 people turned up expecting to see a fight, but a hockey game broke out! The Cardiff Division 1 team barely ever get attendances North of 150.
On the subject of stereotypes, I thought this picture was hilarious and couldn't be more true:

Canadians won't see Speedy Singhs as racists but as part of the mosaic.
We in Canada see ethnics, religion, consensual sex and smoking ciggs as something kept behind closed doors
they've sold it out the past 5/6 years. I can never manage to get tickets in time, since i'm not at either uni I don't find out the fixture date or ticket onsale until it's too late.
This weekend is Timbits weekend here. Sponsored by Tim Hortons.
1,700 5 and 6 year olds from 14 minor hockey associations in Southeast NB will take part in a jamboree.
The kids will parade at the 2 Wildcats games this weekend half at each game wearing their sweaters.
This is repeated across Canada.
Is there anything similar to Timbits hockey in the UK?

There aren't enough players so the closest we have is Under 10's, players range from 5-10 years old.
Teams have 3 lines, the buzzer goes every 1 minute 15 seconds for a line change, so the older/better players are always out against each other.
Okanagan Hockey School Europe are starting an Academy in Swindon. This is a great development as it means talented players won't have to go abroad to get top quality coaching

Be careful this just maybe a money grab. Not saying it isn't.
But on the left side of the Atlantic we've seen many Euro soccer camps affiliated with top Euro clubs hold camps and charge large $ to get low level coaches serve pop and chips and call it teaching (most recently) Dutch Total Football.
The kids ate and snacked and got orange jerseys but learnt little.
