Wings new home to be called the Little Caesars Arena

http://www.tsn.ca/wings-new-home-to-...arena-1.479999

I guess going with Palace would have been problematic

Can't wait for Wings fans to see a game at The Crust!

20 year term that averages more than $6.25 million per year.

The dough would be more appropriate since their current home is the joe.

Strangely everyone I know says Little Cesars is slightly more edible than the box it comes in, but personally it's the only pizza I like.

Could be worst I guess. At least they could have some nice food promotional tie-ins. Speaking of food, as a kid I always thought that the Joe Louis Arena was named after this Canadian dessert/snack :

I like it, but to me it would make me think of Homer Simpson more than the Little Caesar's connection.

And much as the Detroit area's current situation might warrant a D'oh!, I think it'd be a bit cruel in practice...

It makes sense. I usually get Wings when I order a pizza.

I've only ever had one at The Joe, and well, it wasn't very good. Not sure if that was due to arena concessions or if they're generally bad. Maybe I should try one from one of their locations.

The Pizzarena?

for reference, from hockey.ballparks.com

Barclays - 400M/20yr (obviously not comparable due to NYC and NBA team)
Consol - 4-5M per year for 21yrs
Prudential - 105M/20yr (still NYC market)
Xcel - 3M per year for 25 years

Does this mean Illitch can finally pay his cable fees back to 1980 or his rent since 2010 or the money he got to neglect Tigers Stadium forcing it's demolition on 30 minutes notice in a bankrupt city full of abandoned buildings because he did not want that stadium preserved by a conservancy group?

Does this mean Amway is out as the teams sponsor? LOL

Illitch selling the stadium rights to himself must mean there was no serious offer from an outside entity which doesn't bode well but perhaps isn't surprising given that the Wings look to be on a downward trajectory for the foreseeable future.

Little Caesars Arena is kind of a missed opportunity when you think about it. The Little Caesars Coliseum would have sounded way better.

Yeah. I find that hard to believe too. Seems like Illitch just wanted to have his one brand promote the other rather than open the chances of someone else having their company's name on the arena. Of course, one of the automakers shouldn't have been an issue because pizza & cars don't have much competitive overlap.

The Illitch Family has a love affair with Detroit, and that's awesome. I think this is more about tying themselves and their family's brand to the city than anything else.

You're doing good things for your hometown and we live in a world where you pay to get names on sports facilities, so you pay to have that connection. I don't think it goes much deeper than that. I'm sure some organization would have paid to get their name on the arena, but it seems like that would cheapen the connection. At least to me.

Ah yes, the legendary Illitch love affair with the city of Detroit. Of course, when you really love someone, you threaten to leave them unless they give you hundreds of millions of dollars to build them a stadium. And in the very best and most loving relationships you can get TWO stadiums. That's just how love works.

When you mix love and business the lines get blurred sometimes.

Hmmm - cap hit seems a little high.

Is this why they got rid of Datsyuk?

I think you're kidding?

Datsyuk wasn't going to get paid, but his cap hit was going to stay -- 35+ contract. (Assuming you weren't joking, or if bystanders were confused.)

This never happened with the Wings. The Joe was built before Ilitch bought the team. The new arena has half of the contribution from the Ilitches, plus the land. The state (and not the city of Detroit) is giving downtown development fund money for the other portion. The city did receive affirmation that its citizens would get construction jobs too.
