Connor James signs contract & recalled to LA

01/04/06
James Signs First NHL Contract And Is Recalled By The Kings

MANCHESTER, NH – The Los Angeles Kings, the parent club of the Manchester Monarchs, have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with free agent center Connor James and have recalled him from the Monarchs, Kings President of Hockey Operations/General Manager Dave Taylor announced today. In addition, the Kings have placed center Eric Belanger on the injured reserve list (retroactive to December 30) due to a groin injury.

James, 23, has 22 points (9-13=22), 22 penalty minutes and a plus-10 rating in 33 games with the Monarchs this season. The Kings originally selected James, a 5-foot-10, 170-pound native of Calgary, in the ninth-round (279th overall) in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. He has not appeared in an NHL game and will wear jersey No. 56.

Belanger, 28, suffered the injury during the Kings-Phoenix Coyotes contest on December 27 at Glendale Arena. In 38 games with the Kings this season, the 6-foot, 188-pound native of Sherbrooke, Quebec, has 24 points (11-13=24), 32 penalty minutes and a plus-five rating, with his 11 goals tied for fifth on the club. In 296 career regular season NHL contests, all with the Kings, Belanger has 137 points (57-80=137) and 139 penalty minutes.

Good for James, hope he does well.

Looks good if you're under 6 ft and less than 200lbs and playing in Manchester, the chances of being called up to LA is really, really good.

We have to have one of the smaller teams now. As long as they keep winning, I don't care if they're 4ft tall.

Are there enough players left in Manchester to ice a team now?

This counts as a free agent signing...none of you can ask for another upgrade to the team...a signing's a signing even if you sign him from your farm club.

Dave Taylor, you are smooth.

Yes because the Monarchs have pretty much cleaned out Reading. They're really the ones that catch the brunt of these episodes...

Most ECHL teams are affiliated with various lower-tier league as well.

You guys were right. AEG did open the pocketbooks to sign another big time free agent.

pug can answer that better than I can. I know Reading has been playing short in many games this season due to the Monarchs, Hershey and others pulling players out of there...

Meanwhile, we know that Belanger is on IR, but there are still some questions surrounding both Sean Avery and Dustin Brown... (and of course, Cowan is still not in the mix, despite the LA Times indicating he was good to go this past Monday.)

Today's L.A. Times indicated that Brown and Avery are day-to-day. This recalling of James may indicate that one or both won't be available for tomorrow's game.

Not in Reading's case. In fact, coach would rather play short than sign a guy just to have an extra body. From the Royals newspaper blog...
"You get in a situation where, do you sign some warm bodies to have guys on the bench?" Taylor said in our pre-Christmas interview. "Well, if I’m not gonna play people, I don’t want them here. They’re just gonna be in the way. Unless it’s a guy that I want who’s gonna have an opportunity to play, we’re not gonna sign him. I want to stick to our guns and have the guys we have. We haven’t had a lot of trades here and movement. That’s part of our organization. When you come here, you’re gonna be solid and you’re gonna have ground to stand on. The way the guys get called up and down, they move enough as it is."

I'd say the Royals are doing ok despite the short bench. Just completed a perfect western trip (14 skaters for the last few games) that finished with them handing Las Vegas their first home regulation loss. Gotta give it to Coach Taylor, he's doing something right. (named an All Star coach today as well!)

Atta boy Conner!

I guess this means that certain Reading fans are gonna have to eat their words, since they said he was too small to play in the "A" and would never play in the NHL. First former Condor to play in the NHL!

During the lockout last year, I saw him play. Reminded me of Kariya (sorry). His size and they way he skates. Granted, not quite the same talent level as Kariya, but still...

I watched Connor play for four years at The U of Denver, and I couldn't be happier for him to get the big phone call. He's got good wheels, sees the ice well and plays hard on every shift. He's pretty elusive in traffic and made his Denver career converting outlet passes from defensemen into breakways. He is also pretty good down low and has decent defensive skills, and can be a decent penalty killer.

His downside is he's not very physically big or strong.

So with Connor signed and called up, what do our lines look like now?

Frolov-Conroy-Demitra
Luc-Army-Cammy
Kanko-Giuliano-TK
Clarke-James-?

I'm probably missing people, but with all the call ups, I'm out of the loop.

Yep, kids got some speed. He used that outlet pass/breakaway to a T in Bakersfield. If he gets the puck and has room, he is gone.
