Ok so after seeing RJ Umberger have a pretty good season with the Flyers (rrrrrrrrrr I HATE THEM) I remembered that he was a Ranger but they couldn't get him under contract (I hope I'm right about this).
Anyway that got me thinking about other Ranger's prospects that we traded away in the past two/three years and whats up with them. Names like Kloucek, Malhotra, Brendl and more recently Lundmark. Remind me of others because I forgot with so many fire sales for overpriced veterans throughout the years. It appears that these guys, after garnering much respect from us fans, go on and do nothing with other teams. In fact other than Cloutier and Marc Savard, (who is having a great year) and they were traded a LONG LONG time ago,I can't really think of many other prospects in more recent times that have gone on and done anything good for their new teams.
23 when he was traded away, and Nedved was still kind of young when he was let go, the first time. Cloutier did well after leaving too. Lapperriere's doing well this season with Colorado - played well with the Kings, but was a third liner. Amonte and Weight have done well for themselves too as has Todd Marchant (until this season I guess). Tough going through each season in my head, so I'm stopping there.
looking at this thread you would feel a little depressed except for the fact you remind yourself that the islanders traded away Loungo, Bertuzzi, Ziggy Palffy, Tim Connolly. Chara, Brewer, McCabe, Redden, and Stillman. Basically the Islanders could have had an all star team right now that makes ottowa look like shrimps.
Cloutier has been a starter (with mixed results) for 5 years now.
Zidlicky has had a very nice NHL career.
Malhotra has gone and become what he should've become, a solid third line center.
Kloucek was already damaged goods when he left and the jury is still out on whether Lundmark can last as an NHL player for the long haul.
Brendl was an out and out bust.
Johnsson has gone on to become a very solid defenseman.
Norstrom as well.
The question is how far back do you want to go? Do you go to the Amonte, Marchant, Weight, Zubov, Domi days? Or do you want to go more recent. The problem with more recently is that there have been some bad trades and some bad drafting to boot.
i say go back to 97....when we started dumping people to win now with the great one.....
Since '97 you'd have a list containing:
Two First round picks (00 and 02)
No real superstars but you point to Two top 6 forwards, a third line forward, a starting NHL goalie, two top four defenseman and two first round picks.
Not as bad as their mid 90's years, but part of that is also due to them just not having a whole lot to trade. The era is tough to swallow because the Rangers essentially got nothing for themself. What little they did produce they traded, and what they kept really didn't make it for a good 4 year span.
