if the nyi keep falling out of the race,I'd look for them to make Niinimaa or Sopel available. Both make $2.4m a yr and are ufas in 2007.

Isles have DiPietro,Dubie and Snow,so I doubt they'd be in the mix for goaltending.I'd think Clayton Stoner would be of more interest then a Wild goalie.

Sopel for Mitchell or Walz? Or whatever, I'm not really picky.

If you didn't watch Wednesday's game with the Wings you might want Jason Wooley.

If you did, you can still have him!

How about a young kid? Danny Syvret has looked good in his call up's to the Oilers this year. Could something be worked around him, Morrison/Jussi/Conklin + a pick for one of your goalies?

Yup. Isles could sign him this summer (if we have payroll room), so no sense in trading for him now.

I'd still do it just to get Sopel off the payroll for next year. Mitchell would act as a placeholder this year, and we'd get to see how he fits on the squad, so when he hits UFA we'll know how much to realistically offer him to stay. Plus, I think when a guy hits UFA, whoever previously had his rights is in a slightly advantaged position to sign him. Sometimes just so he doesn't have to move again, but also just because you get to negotiate before he officially hits the free market.

Agree on all points.

Still, at deadline time Sopel ought to be tradeable. I'm not saying he'll bring huge return, but perhaps a 2nd rounder equal to the one we gave up.

As strange as it sounds, this is something I'd think about. Gonchar could maybe use another change in scenery and on a highly defensively responsible team, his great offensive skills could be utilized even more. He couldn't be as bad as Andrei Zyuzin, could he?

His contract is a huge concern, but it might be by the end of it that we even get that close to the cap. Just comes down to management wanting to spend.

High risk, high reward indeed...

It's possible, but I think a team would have to be pretty desperate. I didn't like giving up the 2nd for him in the first place, and at that time his value was higher because he was a) coming off a good season and b) without a contract and therefore not overpaid (yet).

I'd love to get a 2nd back for him, but I suspect his value is lower than that. But if a team sees their PP quarterback go down right before the deadline, someone might make a desperate move for him. So I suppose one never knows.

Take it for what its worth but there were a couple of 'rumors' concerning the Lightning in the St. Pete Times. Seeing as this is a Wild thread, one had Fredrik Modin going to Min for Manny Fernandez. Is this just a rumor down here or has this been making the rounds up there too? Not really sure how real it would be because we'd have to turn around and trade either Grahame or Burke. Most likely Burke since he's paid more than Grahame and is 8 years older.
