Corel Centre Name to be Changed

Just heard on the 6 o'clock news that the name of the Corel Centre will be changed to Scotiabank Place.

Expect a formal announcement tomorrow.

Yuck. It doesn't have a nice ring to it at all. It'd be nice if they at least pretended like they attempted to come up with a slightly original name. "Scotiabank Palladium" would work better. Fits the team, doesn't sound as generic/boring, and it's got nostalgia.

Canadian Banks taking over naming rights in the NHL. ScotiaBank Place? Ewww. I say we all refuse to call it that and from now on refer to it as the Palladium. Just for the fun of it. I know I wont be saying Scotia Bank Place again anytime soon

That's right. Part of the Nova Scotia takeover of the rest of Canada. New Bunswick is in our hands....now our companies are coming to take over Ottawa. Start with hockey, work your way down to government.

Still tink it's a terrible name. But ScotiaBank Centre also sounds like a decent name instead.

I posted this over 8 months ago... I think it sounds awkward. Don't like it.

Scotia Centre would be better IMO.

Well, the one silver lining is that Scotia Bank is less likely to have to back out of the name down the road. I'm actually surpised that the Corel Centre name lasted as long as it did.

I remember when they named it the Corel Centre. I vowed to not call it that, and use the original "Palladium" name. I gave up on that pretty quick.

It's not the greatest name, but, I can understand wanting to have "Scotiabank" in the name, rather than just "Scotia" for branding purposes. The only other alternatives was to use something like "Centre" or "Arena" rather than "Place", but, they probably wanted to go with the option that gives them the least amount of sylables, to prevent people from shortening it on their own.

lol i think i vowed not to call it the Corel Centre too. In the end I'll probably be a good little consumer and go along with the corporate advertising ugly naming and say scotiabank place too. ewwww. Nope not gonna do it. At least its not TD BankNorth Gardens.

Screw that!

I'm just going to continue calling it the Corel Centre.

If they're actually changing it though, i like "The Vault"

When they changed it to the CC, I hated it, and thought I would continue to call it the Palladium. That never happened.

I'm sure with time everyone will be calling it Scotiabank Place. Ugh.

Scotia Centre sounds nice. However IMO it doesn't sound nearly as horrible as TD Banknorth Garden?? Boston's arena.

Another arena going by "place"... sigh...

GM place is the worst name ever. They need to keep the corel centre as a "centre."

There could be worse names. The worst has to be Nashville's Gaylord Entertainment Center. However, getting $4 million a year probably takes the sting off it a little.

I also remember when Florida's arena was called the National Car Rental Center.

I hate to break it to you, but, the powerplay has been taken over by Direct Energy. I really liked the Cognos Powerplay one as well. I'm suprised they let such a perfect marketing opportunity go.

I think this year. I probably would have noticed if they did it before. I can't imagine that Cognos didn't give it up without a fight. My guess is that Direct Energy came forward with a better offer, and Cognos didn't have the budget at the time to match.
