Good playmaking LW from a top team. Needs to add some weight to his frame to be more effective.

Future Considerations, 179:

Quote:
BRANDON HAGEL
POSITION: Left Wing
SHOOTS: Left
TEAM: Red Deer (WHL)
BORN: August 27, 1998
VITALS: 6’-0” / 165 Lbs
STATS: 72 GP 13 G 34 A 47 PTS 46 PIM

Hagel is a skilled, playmaking winger. His skating is effective with strong agility, but his overall stride lacks strength. He has strong puck awareness and a stranglehold of the puck in open ice. An extremely smart and pesky forward able to process the game at an electric speed, Hagel is more of a pass-first player looking for his teammates off the rush. He has good hand-eye coordination, and can knock down hard-to-track pucks and make a pass to an open man. He has the complexity and confidence to make the above-average plays and not just the short, simple connecting pass. His shot is poor at this point, lacking consistency in velocity and accuracy, and he needs to either be in tight to squeak one through the wickets or rely on puck luck from afar.

His urgency to cover his man or get pucks simply out of the zone are a struggle when forecheck pressure was ramped up. Hagel shows a willingness to attempt physical play, but he has very minimal success impeding progress or battling for pucks against even smaller players. He is a consistent player on the power play and shows that he is an above-average offensive guy when he has the extra space to create. He has the offensive skill, but looks like more a complementary winger as opposed to a driving force. While he’s a long-term project, Hagel has good positional instincts and makes smart reads with the puck. He shows an ability to attack with speed and has excellent vision. He is physically far from being an NHLer, however, he could be an excellent value pick for a team willing to wait.

NHL POTENTIAL: Middle-Six Offensive Winger

I don't recall much of him when watching the Rebs, but seems like someone who could use professional strength coaching to see what it does for his game.

certainly needs work.

but his compete is off the charts.... if he could become a 13-15th forward in the org who becomes a top notch AHLer... would be great.

RLR ranked Hagel #91, praising his compete and puck possession, while acknowledging his room for growth:
Quote:
Rookie WHLer impressed us more with every viewing, earning icetime on deep club. Has natural hockey sense with a knack for winning puck battles. Feet are always churning in puck pursuit. Shows great puck protection along with a quick stick. Heads-up distributor with fantastic misdirection on passes -- stares down goalies suggesting shot, then sends no-look feeds to teammates in prime scoring areas. Buys time for linemates and spreads the ice with touch passing. Everything he does quietly contributes to teams success. Future puck possession machine. Constantly maintains good balance in traffic despite Bambi legs after recent growth spurt -- has grown six inches in last two years. One of the youngest draft eligibles shows potential for vast improvement as he continues to add muscle -- already comfortable in contact. Long, loping stride despite lack of leg strength. Finishes all his checks. Great stamina -- frequently creates chances at end of shifts.

Projection: Bottom-six winger who's strong in puck possession.
Style compares to: Colton Sceviour

I have no idea who Colton Scevior is. In Sabres lingo, comparables / strengths / role / potential, I'm thinking cross between Mike Ryan and Brian Flynn...

Seems to have that competitive drive where no one is going to show him up. I really like this pick. Might not be anything more than an AHLer but he might be a bigger Gerbe. Just a constant motor.

I loved Hagels game today. Bakes too. I think he's got a shot at a bottom six role. Hard not to like a player with that much jam.

It's definitely a skill to maintain the level of energy and physicality he does every shift.

This kid is one of the youngest players in the draft, is really slight and was a rookie in the WHL. He's going to be one to follow forsure.

This could really shape up to be a team-defining draft. There's lots to cheer for in our picks.

At this point it's far more promising then past drafts, we have alot of guys with legit chances of being players this year.

Hagel buried his own rebound for the opening goal in last night's 6-1 win over EOK, finishing with 1+2 on the scoresheet. He also sported an "A". Red Deer's in action again tonight vs Calgary.

Thanks

Do you have google alerts set up for every prospect, or do you spend time pouring over amateur hockey team sites looking for this stuff?

Looks like a kid whose offensive production in his draft +1 season is going to explode. 6 points in 3 pre-season games.

Its pretty early, so its hard to say.

But he did standout at the prospect camp so lets hope its not a mirage.

Edit: If you have any faith in the accuracy of advanced stats for junior hockey, Hagel was 2nd on the Red Deer in points/60.

Is he not with the Red Deer anymore. Why does hockeydb say he's back with the AJHL?
