Madden Thinks Patrick Won't be GM Next Year

Yeah, I don't have a link or anything, and it was only a ten second statement from Mark Madden on ESPN Radio in Pittsburgh, but...

he just said he doesn't think Patrick will come back next year. He said he's in the last year of his contract, and doesn't really seem to be "into it anymore" or something like that.

I just found this statement very surprising. I always just took it for granted that CP would be the Pens GM for... ever.

Has anyone else really considered this possibility?

I support Madden for the fact that he gives the Pens a lot of air time, but the guy knows hockey like that Red_Bull guy knew hockey.

don't forget that defensive defenseman are no longer needed
and that big defenseman will be phased out of the "new NHL"
and that big time goalies will make far less of an impact
and that the penguins are one of the best teams in the east

He's an idiot. He's been proven wrong so many times I can't believe anyone puts an ounce of stock into his word.

Madden said that was a rumor he had heard....

Regardless, anyone who knows ANYTHING about hockey would shrug that rumor off. Its just rediculous.

How about Rico Fata for Alexander Ovechkin?

The rumor has little credibility with me. First, The Pens never force anyone out, deserving or not, until pulled kicking and screaming to do so. Has everyone forgotten he Edzo situation? Second, Patrick did not have the greatest off season to want to leave on his own. If he were to leave he would want to leave on more of a high I would think. Just does not make sense however you slice it.

As a ps, I love the guy as a GM and hope that he stays on for a long time to come, and additionally have high hopes that stay will be in Pittsburgh, despite more silly rumors out there.

in the final year of a contract, anything's a possibility.

patrick's turning 61 soon and has been the GM for 16 years. that's a long time, and he's literally been around hockey his whole life. maybe he's ready to move on at this point in his life.

but this could just be madden talking. as noted above, madden's often said a lot of things with a lot of confidence (one can't help but thinking kovalev resigning as a "done deal") and has been wrong before. i don't doubt he's got significant sources in the penguins' organization but i wouldn't put too much faith in it.

regardless, it is interesting how this situation will shake out, because CP won't be around forever no matter what.

I'd suggest that a change in the GM's chair could do wonders. I totally believe the notion that Patrick may no longer be into it.

Whatever you think of the man pre-summer of 2005, he really didn't have a good off-season. Perhaps new blood would be good for this franchise going forward.

Let's say that the Penguins and Craig Patrick do part ways.

Who are possible replacements worth consideration? And do we need to worry about a Penguins/Mario loyalist getting the job?

The most obvious, and only one that comes to mind, is EJ. But then again, he's older than dirt. Anyone else?

That's what I was getting at. I'm hoping that if CP's departure is near the Penguins choose to look outside of the organization. Keeping a GM hiring is only going to lead to more of the same IMO.

It would be nice if they could pry someone away from an organization like the Wings, Devils or 'Lance where guys know how to scout for talent.

Yeah and Madden also said that The Rangers were gonna give us Kim Jonsson, Mike York, Pavel Brendl(when he was still a blue chip prospect) and an assload of cash for Jagr.
