Legendary numbers

What are some of the legedary numbers that hockey players have worn. I was thinking of:
1-Bernie Parent
21-Peter Forsberg
33-Patrick Roy
99-Wayne Gretzky
4-Bobby Orr
9- Gordie Howe (not sure of his number)
91-Sergei Fedorov
19- Steve Yzerman or Joe Sakic
2- Brian Leetch
17-Jari Kurri
11-Mark Messier

Just to name a few.

I'm sorry...did you just say that you arent sure what number Gordie Howe wore?

Also...lets not forget the OTHER #99. The one...the only...Wilf Paiment.

In the 50's and 60's [or so I've heard] #9 was the number of honor. The Rocket,Howe,Bobby Hull,Andy Bathgate,Johnny Bucyk [I think ?]. Jean Beliveau had his #4 retired, and Larry Robinson belongs with Sakic and Stevie Y. as great #19's.

For some reason, these 4 players and their numbers always stick in my memory:

16 Bobby Clarke
21 Stan Mikita
29 Ken Dryden
35 Tony Esposito

#9 is the best all time number. Richard, Howe and Hull, three consensus top 10 players of all time.

While all of these players have been excellent to great players, I would hardly call all of these numbers legendary. Legendary would be a number that when you take a poll 99% of the people answer with one name, i.e 99= Gretzky.

Dude, one of my friends asked me if there was a #19 on the Wings.... While we were at Hockeytown Cafe... I'm considering not being friends with him anymore.

How about 6 Hart trophies, 6 Art Ross trophies and 20 consecutive seasons in the top 5 in scoring? Gordie Howe Hattrick (goal, assist, fight)? Nasty elbows? Mr. Hockey?

19=Trottier
Sakic, Robinson, and Stevie follow, but Trots starts the line.

Orr noses out Beliveau for 4.
Brett over Dionne for 16.

I would hardly call Forsberg's 21 and Fedorov's 91 legendary. I would say Jagr's 68 is more well-known than either, and I wouldn't equate Jagr's 68 as legendary.

Outside of 99 for Gretzky and 66 for Lemieux, there's only two others I would rank as legendary: 4 for Orr and Beliveau, and 9 for Richard, Howe and Hull. That's it.

We've had some great 7s over the years (Espo), Bourque and Coffey wore 7, but will likely be best remembered for 77. The best 16, of course, is Bobby Clarke. The top 19s, IMO, are Trottier and Robinson, followed by Yzerman and Sakic.

Outside of the four I mentioned, no numbers, IMO, deserve status as legendary numbers, where we remember the number as much as the player, at least among the all-time greats. (A case could also be made for 88 with Lindros, but I don't regard Lindros as an all-time great).
