Would you pick up Mogilny on re-entry waivers?

Simple enough question. Mogilny may make 3.5 million this year but since NJ foots half the bill and half the season is over Detroit only pays $875,000 this year and 1.75 million the next.

Doesn't sound too bad does it? I would providing the Wings have enough space. but it shouldn't be too hard to create enough room to fit Mogilny in.

Plus it really helps Detroit's scoring and speed. Right now one line is what, Zetterber-datsyuk-Shanahan. Lang has Samuelsson and Williams to work with. not good enough IMO. If Lang had Mogilny to work with that would be much better.

even if we have find cap room to take on $3.5mil, we can spend that money much more wisely than on another aging vet. got nothing against the guy, but we can do better.

That does sound like a good salary, but what if Mogilny ends up not playing next season? does that mean Detroit will have to pay 1.75 million next season?

Besides, the Wings need another d-man, I would'nt want another offensive player at the moment.

If he's picked on re-entry waivers it wouldn't be 3.5 million. It would be much less than that. $875,000 for the rest of this year.
$1.75 million the next.

But that all depends on Mogilny being called up. Which may not happen. Who knows.

He'd probably get picked up before you guys got a shot. I could see Washington or Boston getting him first.

Like the idea in that Mogilny is still an excellent skater at 37, but I have to question whether or not Alex has the desire to lay it on the line every night from now untill June (hopefully).

but the cap hit is still $3.5mil and we've got better things to do with that space.

No way. We have zero need for Mogilny. He actually would likely make our team worse as he's more of a liability than his points are worth (which is why he got waived in the first place).

pretty much, it looks like Detroit doesn't have a problem scoring after tonight. You've got plenty of firepower so why take away from the chemistry by adding an injury prone former sniper?

Good game tonight.

Yeah, there really is no need for Mogilny. I say pass.

I don't believe this is correct. The team that waived him would still be on the hook for half the contract and half the cap hit. The Wings would only be on the hook for the salary for the remainder of the year, plus 50% of his salary for next year on next year's cap.

And no, I wouldn't want Mogilny. They have enough up front to make a run, it's the D that could use some help. I still kind of like the idea of trying Maltby with Schneider on the back end, just to see how it goes. Malts is overpriced for his role as a forward but if he could man a D spot effectively he'd be a bargain.

I think I'd be more tempted to take a chance on Dave Andreychuk.

And as for people being "No good" how many times have the Wings picked someone out of the trash and done well?

Draper, Kocur, Samuelson,Murphy.....

Almo was playing on the Devils top line until Elias came back, and he was not out of place. The price is a bit steep even if the Devils had to pick up half the tab, but I'd still probably take a chance on him. We need another top six winger and there are still few in the NHL that can shoot like Almo can.

For example, the last game Thornton played with the B's was against the Devils. Almo won that game with a goal right off the faceoff with a couple seconds left in the game. The puck came to him cleanly and he picked a corner before Razor knew what happened. The fact that Thornton lost the faceoff the way he did was rumored to be one of the final straws leading to the trade. Anyway, the point is Almo is a sniper in the truest sense of the word and the idea of pairing him with Dats makes me giddy.

I've always dreamed that Mogilny would play for Detroit someday, but my bias makes it hard to determine if he would actually help or not. Who wouldn't want to have a line with Sasha and Pasha on it?

There are a handful of other Sashas I'd rather have on the team than Mogilny.

I would have liked to see it 4 years ago. Mogilny isn't the same player these days. And he's overdue for another bulging disc or tweaked neck or pinched nerve or whatever.

I would only want the Wings to pick up Mogilny if they were just going to trade him for a top notch Dman. Otherwise it is a no-go. The Wings achilles heel is their D right now, which won't get you far in the playoffs, IMO.

Well, considering that any NHL team could have claimed Mogilny for nothing when he was on waivers makes me believe there's no way he could be traded for a top notch defenseman. So if we acquired Almo it would have to be because we want him and believe he can directly help the team. He's got no value as a bargaining chip (thanks to Lou and the outrageous salary he offered).
