Yzerman surpassed Howe

on all time scoring list with a beauty of a set up for Lang yesterday. AND Gordie is in the attendance to congratulate!

I might be (and most likely is - starting this thread mostly out of sheer excitement) a sentimental old fool but I feel that it is a really significant date and an important milestone in the history of Red Wings in terms of maintaining the traditions and passing the glory of previous generations onto upcoming youth.

Way to go, Stevie. Passes Mr. Hockey for all time assists.

BTW, when Wings do Stevie retirement, lets try to keep it less nauseating than the Messier retiremnent.

I wouldn't be a hockey fan without sentimentality. Heck, it's half of the game. I always wait for that next monumental moment to remember for the remainder of mein leben

For how pathetic he can look out there sometimes...it takes that hit from Kapanen to piss him off and he makes a great pass to Langer for a great goal. That was a cool moment last night for sure.

Read the announcements, fellas. They'll be done with those updates before too long.

Steve needs more playing time. Put him with Lang and Samuellson and give the guy some PP time. He's showing he can still produce.

This isn't necessarily the case. Too much ice time will probably wear him down again. I would argue that a few even strength shifts and a few PP shifts a game - 10 or 12 minutes worth - should be enough to get him into the game but not tax him too badly. Once the playoffs roll around and there's no tomorrow, then I think they should look at upping his ice time. But for now, no, we should try to keep him fresh.

I don't think 10-12 minutes per game consistently would be the way to go. I think slowly upping his ice time as the season progresses would be a better approach. You can't play a guy 10 minutes and then expect 15-20 or even more quality minutes from anyone on a regular basis.

But at the same time, you can't expect Stevie to hold up if you play him 20 minutes a night.

We don't have a single forward that averages 20 minutes a night. Hank is the only forward that even averages more than 18 minutes a night.

I wouldn't be against Yzerman taking up some of Will's minutes. Willy has significantly cooled off and his mistakes/turnovers are driving me nuts. Will is up at 14:54 minutes a night.

Top 6 of
Hank - Pavel - Shanny
Sammy - Lang - Stevie (flip the wings if Sammy can't play the left side)

I trust Stevie a lot more than Will with the puck and making the right decision with it. Will has a nice hard mostly accurate right-handed shot but I don't see him fitting in anywhere now that his horseshoe has dropped out. I can see him with Hull's floating high-slot position on the 2nd PP unit, but no more point duties for him.

I think it is safe to say the Wings are not a one line team like many others out there. Congrats Steve, you are the definition of leadership and greatness.
