January Prospect of the Month

T.J. Oshie was the Blues' Prospect of the Month for October.
David Backes was the Blues' Prospect of the Month for November.
T.J. Oshie won the December Prospect of the Month honors, the second month this season that he has done so.

This month, both Oshie and Backes are again up for consideration as the Blues' Prospect of the Month, along with several other repeat candidates, and a couple of newcomers to the Prospect of the Month list.

All January stats include games through 16 Jan 06.

David Backes - RW/C, Minnesota State-Mankato (WCHA): Power forward in the making continues to carry his team on his back, leading the Mavericks in points and penalty minutes, second in goals. 0-4-4 with 2 PIM in two games for Minnesota State so far this January.

Konstantin Barulin - G, Spartak Moscow (Russia): 2.09 GAA, 5-2-1 record, .909 save percentage in 10 games played since since mid-November. 21-year-old is currently one of the top goaltenders in the Russian Superleague, and would sure look good in a Rivermen sweater next year.

Chris Beckford-Tseu - G, Alaska Aces (ECHL): 2.01 GAA, 3-1-0 record, .926 save percentage in 4 games in January. Got a cup of coffee with the Blues as an emergency backup for Jason Bacashihua in December, and saw limited action in Peoria before being sent back to Alaska.

Michal Birner - C, Saginaw Spirit (OHL): 3-7-10, plus-4, one power-play tally in 6 games in January. Had 3-assist performances vs Sarnia (1/6) and Ottawa (1/14) at home. 0-2-2, minus-1 in 6 games for Czech Republic at World Junior Championships.

Jon DiSalvatore - RW, Peoria Rivermen (AHL): Quietly putting together a career-best season in Peoria this year, scoring at a point-per-game clip. 2-4-6, plus-3 in four games for Peoria so far in January. Both goals were game-winners.

Mike Glumac - RW, Peoria Rivermen (AHL): Took over as Peoria's leading scorer in January while Peter Sejna was having a cup of coffee with the Blues. Leads team in goals, points, and plus-minus. 1-2-3, plus-2, 4 PIM in 4 games thus far in January.

Nikolai Lemtyugov - RW, CSKA Moscow (Russia): Unheralded 2005 seventh-rounder caught the eye of observers in the World Juniors, where he was 4-1-5 and plus-4 in six games. Has been quietly having a very successful season in Russia.

Ryan MacMurchy - RW, Wisconsin (WCHA): Six-two, 208-pound senior RW drafted 284th overall in 2002 is Wisconsin's penalty leader with 51, and tied for fourth in scoring with 6-9-15 totals in 22 games. 1-1-2 in 2 games in January, his goal was the game-winner in a 9-1 rout of Colorado College on January 14.

T.J. Oshie - C, North Dakota (WCHA): Got a lot of attention at the World Juniors, where he was one of the best players for Team USA despite only managing one goal and 10 PIM in 7 games. 1-1-2 in 4 games back at North Dakota in January.

Ryan Ramsay - C, Alaska Aces (ECHL): Started the season in Peoria, recently sent down to Alaska and has responded with 4-6-10 totals in 8 games so far this month. 26 PIM shows his physical side. Put up 3-5-8 totals with 41 PIM in 26 games at Peoria before being sent down.

Marek Schwarz - G, Sparta Praha (Czech): No games played in Czech League since 31 December; 2.56 GAA, 1-2-0 record, .909 save percentage in 3 games at the World Juniors.

Honorable Mention for this month goes to C Trent Whitfield. The 27-year-old is a little elderly for true "prospect" status, but he's been tearing it up in Peoria this month (3-3-6, plus 2 in 4 games), and overall. The 5-11, 204-pounder is 12-19-31 in 27 games, with eight of those goals coming on the power play.

The "Where Are You" award goes to LW Peter Sejna. Despite a 17-24-41 point total, and 13 power-play tallies, in 31 games, Sejna did not play for the Rivermen over the weekend of January 13-15, when the Rivermen beat rival Omaha twice in a home-and-home series. Sejna failed to impress in his most recent callup to the Blues, and it's starting to look as though his days as a top prospect in this organization may be numbered.

Sejna was suffering from headaches this past weekend and sat out as a result.

I have numbers from 12/31/05 and from this past Saturday on all of the prospects, I'll double-check them all tonight. But right now I'm leaning towards Disalvatore with his play as of late.

The results are all over the board so far. No love for Ryan MacMurchy or Marek Schwarz, though...

We need some more hits on this poll, folks... tell your friends.

naihlflames, you voted "Other." Who do you think the prospect of the month should be, and why?

was going to vote for Bishop again but he has had a bad month.

Lemtyugov had a great tourny so i went with him

Lemtyugov + some muscle = NHLer

Not bad for a none ranked player taken 219th overall

I went with Barulin, my #2 was going to be Lemtyugov, and third was DiSalvatore.

I give the tip of the hat to Nikolai Lemtyugov, seventh rounders aren't supposed to play like that in the WJC. Gotta love Jarmo....

I am going with Oshie again because of the raves he drew at the World Juniors.

Well for one it's only the 20'th so I think it is a bit early. However, my vote was for Alexei Shkotov who has recovered from his injury and starting to play better in the RSL (3 goals and 3 assists in 5 games #1,#3 in 2 of the last 3 games). Runner up, I would go with Oshie.

In the new more wide open and less physical NHL, a smaller shifty guy like Shkotov could thrive and maybe be a Svatos or Prucha in the making. Blues need to get him back to N.A. next year.

I don't have all of the stats for the Russian players updated (I'm tracking them down at the moment), but thus far Birner, Backes, Drazenovic, Oshie, Shkotov, and Semin seem to be having good months.

Backes: 5 GP, 1-7-8
Birner: 7 GP, 4-8-12, +4
Drazenovic: 10 GP, 7-4-11, E
Oshie: 6 GP, 3-2-5
Semin: 6 GP, 3-2-5, +3 (may be incomplete)
Shkotov: 5 GP, 1-3-4, +4 (based on everyone else, this is incomplete)

Disalvatore was 2-4-6 and +2 in 5 GP before his call-up.

In net, Bishop looks like he's hit a rough spot; Beckford-Tseu is 4-1-0 with a 2.00 GAA and a shutout, and apparently Schwarz hasn't played since the WJC.

Schwarz needs to get back across the pond so he can play.

All votes in? Going once ... going twice .... CLOSED!

Nikolai Lemtyugov of CSKA Moscow narrowly edges out Jon Disalvatore and T.J. Oshie to be the January Prospect of the Month at HF for his strong play at the World Junior Championships (not to mention the white skates).

Thanks to everyone who voted, the February poll will be up in a few weeks.
