Doug Weight is making $5.7 million for 2005-06. About $2.75 million is left to be paid this season. I believe he is a UFA next year.....not positive though.

If management really thinks they can make a cup run, they'll take a look at him. St. Louis probably won't want that much, just able bodies.

I think they've gotta get a guy like that and a defenseman if they want to make a run. However, both of those things happening are very unlikely.

I think when a GM makes a trade their intentions are to improve their team. This is not always the case but you have to at least give credit for the effort. The fact that their has been no trades from the Kings indicates one or more of the following to me.

1. Taylor and/or upper management think this team is good enough to win the cup.
2. Taylor and/or upper management has no intentions on making a push for the cup.
3. Mediocrity has become so accepted in the organization that to attempt to stray from the norm frightens those in charge.
4. This is about making money for the ownership no more no less. If the Kings happen to get past a round in the playoffs.......good for them.

At this point if Taylor just acquired a 3rd line checker I would at least think that he is doing something......Other than scheduling Petiot for his 6th plane trip in the last 2 weeks.
It could also be that Taylor and the scouting staff hasn't found any player who can improve the team and is available. Or the asking price for the players they are interested in is more than what they are willing to trade.

Trading is about managing your assets to build a contending team. DT has managed his assets pretty well, such as trading away Aulin and Anshakov to give the Kings some kind of chance to compete last season. Trading a low pick for a #5/6 defenseman (Dempsey), getting a second liner (Stumpel) with 2 picks...

You're free to criticize DT for not finding the right players, but one thing he's done which I admire, is held onto his valuable assets, and build a team with many unheralded players.

I am just frustrated at the lack of action coming from the Kings front office this season. If I am correct the Kings are one of only a handful of teams in the whole league who have yet to make a trade since the lockout. They are the only team in the Pacific division to not make at least one trade this season. It is just strange IMO.

I don't think that it's ever about thinking that you're good enough or not to win the Cup. Trading for a player close to the deadline is all about improving the team. You can always improve the team and your chances to win the Cup. Even the best teams (such as Detroit) who could win with what they have still add a piece at the deadline every year. There's no such thing, IMO, in thinking that you can win the Cup if you're sitting on your hands.

I think that what it comes down to with the Kings is simply making it to the playoffs and having 3 home games. If a trade is needed to keep the Kings from slipping out of playoff positioning between the deadline and the end of the season, then Leiweke will okay a sizable trade and DT will pull it. If the Kings are very secure in their position, then DT will do either nothing or just round out the team with a depth player. I really think that the 1st round is all that Kings management have their sights on. That's what they need to break even, monetarily, remember, and we all know that money is the bottom line for the Kings.
