Handzus and Selke?

Do you think Handzus has a chance to win the Selke this year? He's been playing great all-around hockey, and finally deserves some recognition for what he does on the defensive side of the puck. Not to mention, he's put up a relatively quiet 36 points in 49 games. So what do you guys think, Handzus taking away some hardware this year, or what?

I hope he at leasts gets some consideration for the Selke. He certainly deserves it.

He is definitely in the running for it. It's him, Brendan Morrow and Craig Conroy I would say.

I like Zeus, but not a chance he's a Selke candidate. First, he's a minus player. He needs to be at least a +15 or even +20 to be considered. Second, and this is the real unfortunate thing, it seems that the Selke is also about which defensive forward can generate and score the most. Yes, Handzus has 36 points, but only 8 of those are goals. If he had 15 goals and 21 assists, then he'd be in the running.

I hate to diss on Zeus and I like Zeus. But the NHL writers association are a bunch of idiots and they use the same voting formula and criteria every year.

Its unfourtunate but I agree...look at Federov. Gagne might have a better shot at it.

He shouldn't, and he won't. Jere Lehtinen has all but officially wrapped it up, and I can name half a dozen players with better stats and performace then Handzus. He hasn't even been on the PK squad the whole year. I think he is a good player, but he is used too many differant ways to have a chance to win the Selke. If he spent 82 games on a checking line with talent around him, I think he could be in the running, but he is not even a dark-horse this year.

Spot on. Mike Peca, John Madden and Kris Draper all won it the first time they scored 20+, Lehtinen reclaimed it when he scored 30. I'm not saying those players didn't deserve it, but I don't think any of that is coincidence.

What about Mike Fisher then?
From what I've seen, he's an excellent guy when it comes to defense, and he's on pace for 35 goals.

He has been on the PK all year, he hasn't missed a game. Thanks for your input but you just proved yourself to be misinformed.

Handzus has played in every Flyers game, but he has not been on the PK all season. At one point we only had 19 skaters dressed (due to injuries), and each player was only on one specialty team, Handzus was centering the first PP.

Again I'm not knocking his ability, he just isn't used in the type of 'Defensive Specialist' role that he would need to to get Selke rumblings. Could he? As I already mentioned, I think he could. But he has not been used in the role this year.

Instead we have taken advantage of his great all-round game to fill whatever is our biggest hole of the day. I do think he has been our most consistent forward, the 3rd most productive and quite possibly our 2nd most irreplaceable. (Gagne is a real talent, but it would not be that hard to get someone who can be productive on a line with Forsberg)

Fisher and Rolston are front runners but Michal can be among top 3.

BTW, I run NHL mailbag in Czech rep, one fan is suggesting people in Philly are booing on Handzus. Is that true ?

Never! The fans are all yelling "Zeus" but it definately sounds like it. Even Zeus said that he initially thought fans were booing him and he was confused by it.

He is the most under appreciated player I can recall in a long time. Why? Because I have never seen so many who post here including him in trades.

He has been reliable and consistent. He is not flashy. Just a hard worker who get's it done most of the time. I don't care if he looks slow. Bottom line: he get's his points.

Frankly if we had 2 more just like him then I think we could dominate the NHL - but teams don't easily trade players of his calibre.

I'm old

Back in the day... I always thought that a team of 'Bobby Clarke's' would always win the the playoffs against a team of 'Reggie Leach's'. Now Zues is def a step behind Clarke - but only a step. Yes I'd trade him for the right deal - no one - inc Forsberg is untouchable.

Give the man a Selke for pete's sake.

Of course the Clarkes would win. The Leachs couldn't all skate with broken ankles.

Maybe...but Reggie Leach had a shot that put the fear of god into goalies... and he did put the puck inthe net. In his (short) prime he was better than Leclair (in his prime) and better than Kerr.

However - waaay off topic. Sorry about that.

I still say Handzus deserves the Selke
