Countdown to 1700

LEMIEUX FOUR POINTS SHY OF BECOMING SIXTH PLAYER IN NHL HISTORY TO RECORD 1,700 POINTS
10/20/2003

With an assist in Saturday night’s 4-3 win over Detroit at Mellon Arena, Penguins’ captain Mario Lemieux moved to within four points of recording his 1,700th career point.

Lemieux has recorded 1,696 points (683+1,013) in 883 career games, placing him sixth on the NHL’s All-Time Scoring list.

Five other players have achieved 1,700 career points; Wayne Gretzky (2,857), Gordie Howe (1,850), Mark Messier (1,845), Marcel Dionne (1,771) and Ron Francis (1,758).
From the official website.

It will certainly be a magic moment. That is amazing company.

That is definitely an elite group and Mario does belong in their company. Man, I knew that Gretzky is the all time points leader, but I didnt realize he was THAT far in front. 1007 more than anyone else? I dont see too many people coming close to his record unless the NHL drastically changes and becomes open flowing and offensively minded.

It would be nice if they could reward offensive efforts. Perhaps they could scrap the two points for a win and teams could get points per goal they score

Gretz actually went pretty far on the record this past off-season and said that he believes Sidney Crosby is the guy who could break his records. Given he is leading the QMJHL thus far in scoring with 32 pts in 15 games (albeit no Gretzky or Lemieux like junior numbers...) he clearly seems to be equalling the hype thus far.

Granted, Wayne might just be Crosby's first NHL boss so perhaps there is something to gain by boosting confidence. Or conversely, it could be pressure too.

Jeez...Oevechkin this year and Crosby the next for the Pens?? Never happen...but damn... (Portland would really enjoy it! )

What game are you guys guessing it will be? That'd be SWEET if he was one point away before the game against NYI next week. Hell, he could get it tomorrow against the Canes. You never know. I hope it is against NYI (that's the next game I can go to).....

He'll also play in his 900th game. I would sure like him to play in 1000.

I, being Canadian, am VERY proud of the fact that Lemieux won a gold medal. I am also very proud that Straka won a bronze medal and that Morozov has won a silver medal. I want to see pens players playing internationally and having success. Mariano, you need to grow up.

Wow. You are an idiot for saying that. And aren't you a Pens fan?

I think Mario has a great chance to make the Hockey Hall of Fame once he gets his 1700 points. Does anyone agree?

You guys have no sense of humor! I was being sarcastic about Mario making HHOF. It was as if I was saying Gretzky has a good chance to make the HHOF.
