So we are not seeing a residual bump from the World Cup?

Well the WCOH was a total bust so ironically if anything that would hurt the NHL ratings

Last year was pretty dismal as their overall rating share was a 0.17...

To quote:

"At the other end of the spectrum, Florida Panthers games on FS Florida averaged a league-low 0.17 rating, which also is the league’s lowest average rating in four seasons. (Panthers games averaged a 0.16 rating in the 2010-11 season.) This season’s ratings drop of 19 percent from last year comes as a surprise as the Panthers remained in the playoff hunt until late in the season."

Let try this 'fun with numbers' scenario...

Considering a 0.10 rating is worth a generous 1,900 households...

Last year's average was 0.17, so the Panthers PR twitter account 'announces' an 800% increase or the equivalent rating of 1.36...

Rounding up, that would be approximately a total of 25,840 households...

Not a very significant number...

On the local front, many NHL teams are cable-exclusive outside of NBC appearances.

Does the NHL even consider passing a new bylaw requiring teams to sell a package of games to a local broadcast station (syndication optional)?

The people who don't have cable are likely the people who are never going to watch it in the first place.

I've been saying this for a long time, that each team should be required by the league to put a minimum number of games each year on free broadcast TV (say 10%, like 8 games or so). In their blind ambition to build regional sports networks with monopolies on their product, teams have been leaving behind thousands of people from the next generation.

The NFL is eating the NHL's lunch in that regard. There are millions of households who still don't use cable and watch whatever comes over the antenna. Teams would really benefit by picking up new fans who randomly surf across a game once in a while. I cut cable a long time ago at our place, and if I didn't know how to stream games it would be like the Rangers didn't exist because there isn't a single hockey game on free over the air TV except for random NBC games on a weekend afternoon (the Wednesday night game is on cable only).

Bruins pulled OTA games on WSBK-TV after the 2002 season because they could make more money on NESN.

The Red Wings did the same thing with WKBD-TV and by doing so lost viewers on the Canadian side of the river that can't get Fox Sports Detroit.

The Blackhawks allow games on WGN-TV in Chicago as because of a quirk in Canadian TV laws the Chicago feed is allowed to be seen on cable in Canada.

The WGN productions are such trash compared to CSN.

The Rogers numbers indicate once again it all depends on Toronto.

people crying for more Auston Matthews in the US and the game gets 114k on a saturday night.

THIS IS WHY THESE THINGS DONT HAPPEN! Canadian teams do not move the needle. I don't think Gretzky could get ratings in the usa when he was on the Oilers.
