THIS IS WHY THESE THINGS DONT HAPPEN! Canadian teams do not move the needle. I don't think Gretzky could get ratings in the usa when he was on the Oilers.
Granted NBCSN decided to put that game on like 10 hrs before puck drop so its possible people didn't know it was on NBCSN.

Well Gretzky didn't exactly give them huge ratings when he was on the Kings anyway.
And the Leafs were only one part of that equation... the other team was an American original 6 team - that should've been enough to at least get respectable ratings. The best ratings aren't even that good.

NESN is a pretty huge regional broadcaster, it does cover 5 states and most of Connecticut. Approx. 14 million People.
Compared to say MSG-B covers 2,200,000 people. People in Binghamton, Watertown, Plattsburgh, and other areas with natural Sabres fans would have to watch the national broadcast.
Pitt's Regional Network covers 4m or so.
It is much less likely for a Bruins Fan to live without NESN than most other teams fans to live without their Local broadcaster.

IF CANADA HAD 310 MILLION PEOPLE WHAT WOULD GAMES AVERAGE NATIONALLY? It would be unbelievable. Even greater than NFL games in Usa.

It would help if Sportsnet could pick a channel. Every time I go to watch the Canucks, it's on a different channel. Some of those Sportsnet channels require more expensive packages (which I know many of my friends don't have; they end up not watching it or watching a stream instead).

The non-HNIC broadcasts have also dropped in production quality, IMO.

Per @JeffNuich Cubs clinching pennant for first time since 1945 did a 25.8 household rating in Chicago

It seems unlikely that, with leadership team that Sportsnet has in place, they can ever improve the quality of any of their broadcasts. HNIC, while they have gotten rid of the outrageously bad elements, is just a shell of its former self. Watch the ratings plummet if the Leafs continue their less than inspiring performances.

That's right 5 different channels. The only channel, SN360, is on a higher priced package. The rest are on a basic digital pack.

We're roughy 10% of the US population. You can do a rough like for like by moving the decimal. Would be in the range of a big SNF game in the US. The crazier numbers are when the World Jrs do in the 6 million range. Nothing outside The Olympics and Super Bowl do those equivalent numbers in the US.

That's a bit Misleading because Toronto's market is about 25% of Canada. So proportionally for lets say a Maple Leafs-Canadiens game, about 36% of the country is a fan of one of those teams. Nothing like that in the United States is comparable, LA+NY is maybe 15% of the US, and both of those have multiple teams.

The ratings for the heritage classic seem quite low. I guess the utility is wearing out.

2 small market teams playing head to head with the NFL so the number isn't that bad.

No idea what the number is for the NHL Network in the US as they do not subscribe to Nielsen. All the NHL cares about is the number of homes they have access to in the US.

Has anybody ever thought about the impact of being home on TV ratings?
I would think away games would draw better ratings (assuming it is the same opponent, same time) then home games since home games have 10-70,000 or more potential viewers in the stands.

Chicago

Just for interest (HH rtg in Chicago):

2016 Cubs-Indians Gm 1 34.1 rtg

2005 WhiteSox-Astros Gm 1 33.5 rtg
--------------------------------------

2015 Blackhawks-Lightning Gm1 28 rtg

Hockey is really huge in Chicago, but baseball leads.

TSN released some regional numbers for Ottawa and Winnipeg and the Senators are very weak.

HNIC still dropping. Granted lots of competition this past weekend, but still. Can't blame Rogers at this point. Audience just isn't as hockey centric anymore.
