Key arena is not dead yet it is getting more interesting by the minute

AEG is the one behind the Key Arena deal

AEG very close to the NHL. City seems interested?

Key arena as off right now will not meet the requirements of the NHL and NBA. It requires a complete tear down and redevelopment of the property to make it able to house a modern state of the art arena. Peope will sue and declare that its a historic landmark. That's just half the issue. The other half transportation is a total mess there.

NBA and NHL have no interest in Key arena.

Mr Coleman also like the idea of Key Arena.

Gary Bettman and AEG.

Working together on Las Vegas, Phoenix and now Seattle?

Let me be clear, as off right now due to the historic landmark question on the roof. It is impossible to turn Key arena into a NHL/NBA ready arena.

That's the opposite of what's said in the article on both accounts.

I've always thought Key wasn't as poor a choice as many have, but with a private place in SoDo looking very possible I don't see how it works. They should gut it and turn it into something that fits in with Seattle Center a little more.

I'm not holding my breath that someone is not going to sue and challenge that and declaring its historic landmark.

So someone is going to show up and pay 600m for a new arena in a location that does not work due to traffic.

Also nothing says what MGS or AEG will actually turn the key arena or do a rebuild into a NHL/NBA ready arena. So let's see and what happens.

In the end something still needs to be done to Key arena regardless if a new arena happens or not.

So I was driving my wife and friend and "stepdaughter" through Seattle after an extended weekend in Vancouver and heard the Hansen news on the radio. I was kind of wondering about the catch. 98% of the time, one exists.

Maybe Hansen's being honest about all the funding. Maybe there's a detail I'm missing.

BTW, it's only about 30 seconds into explaining this to the car when my wife belts out about how adding the arena would REALLY kill the traffic in the area. Does one overpass make THAT much difference?

But with THAT news, I could also argue that Hansen is offering this as a political bluff while the city is moving on Key. Never mind that the NBA may very well say no to the city; I am still not sure the city isn't offering a middle finger to the league... or to Hansen.

That's if we're to believe this King 5 story, which is otherwise a head-scratcher. It's not like I'm believing much of anything coming out right now.

OR... what if the NBA ends up in SoDo and the NHL has competing offers from Hansen and whomever might be interested in Key? We're talking about a market of similar size to the Twin Cities and Phoenix, where there's separate arenas for each and that may not be an accident. He who owns the lease...

So the city plans on perusing a RFP by December. Depending on how long this takes, it doesn't appear the city is in any rush to jump on Hansen's new offer.

Apparently, they have been approached by more than one legitimate group. I wonder how many of these are potential investors wanting to bring the NBA back with especially if rumours of expansion coming soon are true. Fun times ahead

BTW, shouldn't this thread have a number series again......shouldn't we be on part 8 or 9 by now?

Nothing said that this looking at key arena will actually be for a NHL/NBA arena.

I would much rather Seattle get a team. Cascadia rivalry, road trips and possibly cutting down on the Canucks travel schedule. Who cares about Quebec...

We are more likely to see the Renraku Acrology than a privately funded arena in Seattle.

Well, DUH!

Key Arena was built in the 1960s & has had minimal updates; no wonder the Sonics moved. The only other bad arena on the Pacific coast is the one in San Diego & they are gonna build a new one there.

It was fine for hockey before the 1995 renovations which made it impossible to host hockey long term.

I agree...another team on the West Coast would be excellent overall for the NHL and in particular you guys in Vancouver.....though I do hope Quebec also gets a team too.

That's right - who cares about a potentially lucrative market with a seriously passionate fan base and a real history with both the league and the sport?

It sounds like Seattle would benefit from the new arena but it also sounds like the NBA is really what they're shooting for now.

**Just a couple of thoughts**

1) Can we update the thread title a bit? Maybe Seattle Arena: Hansen to privately fund 100% or something like that?

2) The very first post once the thread was created was, So-so market deserves a team before another market. Can we really do without that? It just never ends well.

Both the NBA and NHL are extremely interested. Article on the NBA this morning:

http://amicohoops.net/sources-nba-ma...rn-a-priority/

Quote:

The NBA appears more determined than ever to return a franchise to Seattle, multiple league sources have indicated to Amico Hoops.

“It’s a big priority,” said one team owner.

The possibility of Seattle landing a franchise seemed to increase with Tuesday’s news that a group fronted by Chris Hansen would foot the entire bill for a new arena.

Key works as a temp venue.

Wally Walker interview on Softy, does this sound like someone that is just focusing on the NBA?:

what would BE the point of hockey coming to Seattle if the NBA has had issues w/ Key which led to the Sonics exiting? Would Key be really amenable as a temp and do we know what Silver's true position is on a potential Sonics return, and where does the history should a Sonics return happen, I believe those records and history stay w/ OKC PER their agreement upon exiting.

2) who would own a hockey team that strictly is in a tenancy scenario and Hansen wanted nothing to do w/ that, hence why a hockey partner was deemed necessary.

Just to clear one thing up. The MOU for sodo arena is still in effect.

Hansen made a proposal to terminate the MOU and make the arena deal 100% private tying the 100% private arena to the street vacation. If city wants it to be 100% private they have to agree to the street vacation.

No street vacation the MOU is still in effect until end of October 2017.
