I think this more means that Bautista is done. I think if Bautista were to return it would be purely as a DH, and that is what Morales brings. If Edwin is gone they would have brought in a 1B, unless they lost their minds and want Smoak to be the starting 1B

I like the signing of Morales if it means the team is still interested in signing Encarnacion. If Encarnacion is out, I would be okay with the team bringing back Bautista to play first base - Reddick also interests me in the outfield as a Bautista replacement. However, if the intent is for Smoak to play at 1B for the entire season with Morales at DH, then I see this as a terrible deal and a huge step back for the team.

Morales will hit homers and drive in runs but he isn't the same hitter that Encarnacion is. More importantly, the step down from Encarnacion to Smoak is absolutely huge.

Nice.

Sounds like he was arguably the best player available in the international free agent class. Only a couple of less MLB ready, but higher upside guys might be ahead of him.

Athletic, good defender, can hit for average and has power potential. Sounds like he can(or has the potential to) play all over the diamond too.

I'm pretty sure the 1B/DH market is pretty deep this offseason, so even if they're out on EE, I think they can grab a decent player.

Smoak needs to be traded, can't hit a breaking ball to save his life. Almost the easiest strikeout in the majors last year.

Rich Hill is one pitcher I am very high on. It will be interesting to me what team picks him up.

Hopefully a potential gem. His brother is legit.

I thought resigning Smoak to a two year deal was bizarre when it happened and it only looked worse from that point on. I hope there's no intention to go forward with him but they must have signed him for a reason.

I hope you are correct.

Bautista isn't worth too much. If another team wants to beat the 3 years at 11M per the Jays just gave Morales so be it.

This move does give the Jays the money to sign Edwin, or another comparably big name.

It looks like the Blue Jays are wanting to play moneyball at 1st Base. Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Jays are showing interest in Steve Pearce as a platoon player with Smoak.

I had a bad feeling this was their plan. I don't know much about Pearce but I know enough about Smoak not to like it. They got away with a Smoak platoon when Donaldson, Bautista and Encarnacion were smashing the ball in 2015. I don't like the chances of it working with both Bautista and Edwin gone.

I'm warming up to the idea of losing Bautista and Encarnacion but replacing them with a combo of Reddick, Pearce, and Morales. We'll never replace Encarnacion but that trio of players would give the Jays a lot of roster flexibility that they didn't have this year.

I've always liked Pearce and I feel like Reddick's numbers could improve a lot in Toronto (somewhat similar to Donaldson's bump). Likewise, Reddick would be a huge defensive improvement on Bautista.

I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of numbers Morales can put up going from Kaufman Stadium to Rogers Center.

Now that Bautista has rejected his QO signing Reddick seems like a no brainer move to make. Left handed hitter who can hit for a decent average while providing an upgrade in the field is pretty well exactly what management seemed to be targeting this offseason. I'm hoping that's a move that comes soon.

Pearce isn't bad. He absolutely demolishes left-handed pitching.

I think we'll have to get comfortable with a signing like that. Shapiro doesn't have a record of giving out big money to anyone.

Reddick is a very underrated player. It would be an upgrade over Bautista if they get him signed.

They still have money for EE.
